A few questions . Want some opinions.

I have a 300 wsm 24" barrel. I have been shooting 165Gr interbonds out of at about 3200fps. It has a VXIII 6.5-20X40mm with MK 4 turrets. It shoots very well. This year I was able to take a blacktail (MY Biggest ever) at 737yd this year. I just want to get a little more dialed this year.
I know it is not the biggest but the area we hunt just does not have big deer. We have killed about 40 dear out of this unit over the past 12 years and this is the biggest to date so I am happy.

My questions are this.

I would like to shoot to 1000 for deer-targets, should I get a 10moa base if I want my turret to be zeroed at 100? I know the scope will do it but am courious if I should have the zero a little towards the top of the ajustment? I hope that makes sence. This gun will typically be shot from 100-700 yards on targets.

Should I be shooting 180 gr? I am loading them from a mag and worry about case capacity and oal with the 180gr.

Untill I build an edge I could be using this for elk. What would be your personal max range for a well placed shot on elk with the 300wsm.

That looks like a real good shot and you have surpassed my level of achievement with LRH. Sooo take what I say with a grain of salt lol!

I shoot a 180 gr Ab with my 300wsm just because I couldn't get it to shoot any 165's vary well. I use H4350 and cci BR2's and am getting 2945 fps. I think you will appreciate the higher BC of the 180 when you get out past 700. I shoot a Tikka T3 and the mag really limits my COAL too. I don't think I dare go any heavier than a 190 because I will loose mag capacity. According to the twist I could still use a 210 ish boat tail but that would be the limit.

I would get the 20 MOA bases and shoot 175 gr or 190 gr SMK or Berger bullets for 1,000 yard deer, which ever my rifle shoots best. (I have had the 180 SMK bullets tumble after 900 yards) I would load them at whatever length shoots best and single load if that is required. At 1,000 yards a quick fallow up shoot should not be that important. You should have the extra rounds handy though. Good luck, Ken

Great shot. Britz is correct in his thought that you will appreciate the extra BC you will get with the 180 past 700 yds.

Personally I would go with a 20MOA base just to be sure and if you decide to push your rifle further than 1000 the extra 10 might help.

If you had some extra cash you could get a Wyatt's mag box to take care of you COAL issues. I have heard of guys putting them in on there own with a dremal tool but I don't know how it's done.

I have my rifle zeroed at 400 yards but I don't get much opportunity to shoot past 800 were I live.

That was a great shot jcoop You wanted an opinion so here's mine

First, 3200 fps for a 165 gr bullet out of a 24" 300 WSM is real good. I could only get about 3050 out my 168 TTSX's in front of about 65.5 gr of H4350.

I get about 3020 out of 180 E-Tips with 66 gr of H4350 and about 3000 with Fed 180 AB's.

In my case the 180's are obviously going to be more efficient.

What would be your personal max range for a well placed shot on elk with the 300wsm.

My personal criteria for making a long distance shot on an elk or buck deer would be the the distance where the bullets opens, which is about 1800 fps for most bullets. And for my loads of 180 bullets, that is about about 800 - 1000 yds depending on Elevation, Velocity and BC. Most elk in MT are going to be encountered about 5000-9000 elevation. I personally dont want to pencil hole a buck or elk at those ranges. I have read about AB's (338 cal) opening up below 1800 fps.

Also, at speeds less than 1800 fps for bullets 180 gr and less, you start loosing a lot of punch (momentum). I would like to know that my bullet is going to open, causing damage, and also exist.

One other thing... as far as bases go... I dont know the adjustment range of your Luepy, but my NF will go up 183 clicks (about 45 MOA) form my present zero which put WAY past 1000 yds. Not a factor for me.

Thanks for the feed back all. MontanaRifleman I kinda know what you mean about the pencil hole thing. I do not think I will be using the innerbonds any more. I just do not know? All of the deer I have killed with them the bulled has either come apart or not opened up (just one 737yards did not open up). But they have all died withen 10 seconds and 10". so I just do not know. It could be a light bullet thing.

MontanaRifleman Do you run them in a mag or single feed them? What oal are you running.

I will try some 180 ABs and maby some 175gr smk or burgers but would like them to feed and know the bergers can have some issues with that.

I think I will try to find a 20moa low profile Mount for the savage. Thanks for the help.

I initially loaded my 180 ETips and 168 TTSX's at 2.930 which just barely fit into the mag of my Sako 85, and resulted in some feeding problems. I alos tried some @ 2.910 which in my rifle was about .150 and .160 off the lands respectfully for those bullets, using the sharpie marking method. The 2.910 lengths fed well through my mag.

For note: I used two fatory loads, Fed 180 SP and Fed 180 ABs that were about 2.82 OAL, way shorter than my handloads and the groups were just slightly tighter than my handloads. MOA's for all loads ranged from 2 - 4 in my rifle which is going to be replaced by Sako right after hunting seaon.

I shot a doe antelope @ 300 yds with this rifle and the 180 SP and she dropped like a sack of potatoes. I had a second doe in my cross hair a about 400 yds but passed on the shot due to my rifles lak of performnce on the range. I also dropped a a buck @180yds. Both bullets hit within 1 MOA of my aim point.

Bottom line, the factory OAL is probably a lot shorter than chamber OAL. Bullets fit to your mag most likley wont reach your lands or even close.

Had to correct the distance off the Lands numbers. Should have been .150 and .160 not .015 and .016.

You can get a 20MOA M1913rail mount for your SAVAGE from EBAY. Just type EGW or evolution gun works in the search block. I have one on my LA savage it was 40 bucks and its awsome. Just make sure you get the right one for your savage some have a flat back and some a rounded.

Thanks I think I will order one of them. It looks a bunch lower than the ken ferral bases I am used to.
