Bighorn through NF 5.5x56 at 1670 yards

The deer hunting was slow but we saw a ton of bighorn sheep. This guy was ranged at 1670 yards. This is hand held through my NF 5.5-22x56 at 22x. He posed standing broadside several times while looking through the spotting scope but not for a picture. He's just over 3/4 curl and there was a couple of smaller rams in this bunch along with 14 ewes. We saw a couple of bigger rams in a different canyon but no pics of them.

i really hope some day to get to hunt those majestic suckers!!! have you ever gotten to hunt for em???

I have never tried to take a picture through the rifle scope like that. I think I will be trying pretty soon, it's kind of cool.

Do you agree that the white spot to the right of center at the first hash mark on the scope is at 5'10" from center of the crossed hair?

5.24 x 1. 047 x 16.7 = 91.6
assuming the reticle ranges at 22x and we are at 22x and they are 5 moa hash marks???

Of course I make 5 mistakes before I even get out of bed

If we consider the "white speck" to be right on the 5 moa horizontal hash mark, then wouldn't it be 16.7 x 1.047 x 5 = 87.42"

I should have mentioned this in the original post but it slipped my mind. The sight picture I had through the scope was waaayyyy better than what the picture shows. Hand holding the camera etc. etc. gave the pic I posted but through the scope that old boy was as clear and sharp as could be.

Before taking the picture, when he was standing and broadside, I did a couple of dry fires and the crosshairs were easily placed right where I wanted them.

We saw at least a half dozen rams 3/4 curl and better. One old boy was darker than the rest and easily a full curl.

We have easily cut the yardage on different bands of sheep in these drainages to less than 500 yards.

My friend, I'm glad I asked the question for some unexplained reason I was using 4 MOA instead of 5; checked again the Reticle_booklet you e-mailed to me and of course you're right, it is 5 MOA. I bet I'll never forget it!

you're right, it has to be on 22x. The reason your numbers did not match ss7mm is because you multiplied the 5 by 1.047 twice.

Not really!

I agreed with you that the "white dot" was NOT exactly at the first hash mark, and estimated ( with the help of a caliper ), that it was 0.24 MOA past the hash mark.
Other than that our numbers were the same although the math was reversed

PS after rereading your post, I misinterpreted where you said the dot was. I was using 5.24 MOA

Sounds like everybody is right on the money for the numbers.

The problem is I would never take the shot where the ram was from where I was. The country is too open between me and the ram, and the winds up against that rock cliff/bluff area are way to unpredictable. At 1670 yards he's safe.

But............it would be easy to cut that distance at least in half and probably down to about 600+ yards if you wanted to work at it a little. Given that shorter range, he's a dead ram........if I could just get a tag. I'll probably draw one when I'm about 80 years old and just have to eat the tag along with my morning mush and Geritol.

Here's a little video of the sheep and their hideout. The wind blows here a lot this time of the year. The day this was taken the Kestrel had it at up to 28 mph.

I have many a windy day there at the Yakima Army Training center. I actually didn't know the wind ever stopped blowing lol.
