A couple of concerns

Don't know if this is the right place for this but there are
a couple of things on this site that could use improvement
from my perspective. I looked but didn't see another
place to post this so please bear with me if this is the
wrong place.

Since the site changed web hosts some while back it has
become rather slow, one of the slowest I visit. OK I can
live with this.

Number 2: can someone please tell me why the text no
longer fits on the page even when there is no large
picture posted amongst the text? There are now two or
three words on the end of eack line of text that I have
to scroll over to view. On this post I'm hitting enter
to shorten each line. I think that works. We'll see here
in a minute.

Big pictures that make it hard to view the text are bad
enough but when it happens all the time....well you know.
I'm not about to leave. Am learning a lot. Does anyone have
any suggestions?

I have one. Unless someting else is done, try to shorten
your posts and pictures.

Perhaps there is something I don't know that would solve
my concerns. Any suggestions welcome!!

Thanks!!

I agree with the speed of the site. It seems to hang quite a bit. At first I thought is was my computer but it doesn't do this with any other site.

I can live with the speed issue. I'm not a paying customer.

But the issue with the text being too wide is aggravating.

At least on my computer linksmechanic's first post is two
lines long but I still cann't see all of it without scrolling right.
Is there anything I can do about that?

That usually happens when there is a picture. I think that is
because the picture file is too large. But it shouldn't happen
when there is no picture. And people could limit the width
of their post just as I am here.

Maybe I do have better things to do.

Try this look on top of page on the view tab, select zoom out. Do it until it gets the size you want.

Even when I set the full field thing a ma bob in the upper right corner to full field I get a wide text like this. I cann't read all of this without scrolling to the right. Is this the way yours looks?

Now if I hit enter here
then I get a narrow text
that I can read without
scrolling right. It is very
hard to read thru a long thread when it runs off the right margin like I'm doing right now. The website computer is making my view even wider than it appears when typing.

So are you guys seeing what I am or not?
I see two lines running off the right margin.

Thanks again!!

Hey, guys. Sorry for the problems. The new scrolling issue is due to the recent addition of the Gander Mountain ad at the top of the pages. That is going to run for a few months. Adding together the width of all three images up there effectively makes it a single 1,000 pixel wide single image. That fits without sideways scrolling for 94% of our users.

The other 6% either have older monitors with maximum 800x600 resolution or newer monitors set to the lowest Windows XP default of 800x600. In XP you can change resolution of modern monitors by following these instructions:

Changing screen resolution in Windows XP

As to speed, I always hold my breath hoping we are fast enough. That is such a subjective thing, what with the potential for individual misbehaving computers. For example, mine has been misbehaving for several months. It is only 5 months old and I have had repeated problems with it.

On the other hand, my wife's laptop on the same internet connection loads all the pages faster. Just yesterday I saw on some site somewhere? the info that ranked our site speed as in the top 84% of all websites. Wish I could remember where that was. But I still hold my breath because I feel very responsible to you guys for a good surfing experience on my site.

Varminator, are you able to tell me the resolution of your screen, is it modern enough that you can set it higher?

I'm also running Firefox in version 3.0 at a screen resolution of 1280x1024. I have all ads enabled and am on cable broadband hookup.

I have no speed problems and all screens, no matter what is on them, display fully and normally. The only exception is if someone posts a huge picture and then it's just a matter of 2 mouse clicks and the picture fits the screen so it's not a big deal really. I also run an extension on Firefox that enables me to set the text size and screen size for each site. This setting then is automatically implemented whenever I return to that site so it's a one time thing and then they display the way I want them to. It's No Squint and you can get it here: --> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=no+squint&cat=all

I also make sure that I only save cookies that I determine necessary and clear my cache after each internet session.

Where Varminator 911 has the problem with a line of text that is too long, I see it fine and his lines that are shortened by hitting return display on my monitor as being about 25% of a normal line length, if that much.

Even though there are 3 "ads" at the top of the page, they display fine on my monitor and there is no scrolling required.

Monitor display settings, cookies, cache and a computer that is routinely checked for infectious type stuff help make surfing a much more enjoyable experience.

On M$ Vista w/ Firefox 3.01, screen size on my Dell Inspirion 9400 is 1980 x 1080. Everything fits. Adds on top and side are no problems.
I too have the slow load, and I am on wireless internet. But you know what.... that's O.K. with me! I can handle the wait. When we had dial up,
it would have let me get a cup of coffee between page changes!! Besides, I like this place. THANKS Len!!!

This is what I see on my screen. It may not be real clear but it gives you the idea of what I see and what your post looks like on my monitor.

Thank you Len and everyone else. My monitor is about 8 yrs old.
So I'm fairly certain that is the problem. At least now I know what is needed to fix things up.

I'll check out the Firefox. But probably need a new monitor first.
Will admit I'm not the fastest on the uptake for computer stuff.

Thank you for addressing my concerns!!
