Just curious if anyone is shooting a short barreled 338edge? And what kind of velocity they are getting.

I ordered a 30" Light Varmint contour barrel but got a 26" #4 sporter fluted. Nice looking barrel, is it worth making it a light 338 edge?

Thanks

From what I have read, no, its not worth hanging onto. Just about every high performance edge seems to be shooting at least 28 with most being 30 ". I think the thinking is that you dont get enough velocity benefit from a 26, but you can with a 30 ????? I have a 5.6 sendero taper 30 " Hart.

But then again, I don't build 'em ? I just own one.

If you plan to shoot heavy bullets the Edge is worth it in any barrel length. If you are going to shoot lighter bullets say the 225 NAB (a really good bullet) out of a 26" barrel there is just not much advantage. I would chamber in 338 RUM if your planning on light bullets and the 26" tube. I personely believe you will be happier with a 30" tube and 300 grain bullets like the SMK or the new Berger as soon as it is available.

Shawn, I found you! I am also a retired LEO and enjoy long range shooting. Some sniper friends of mine have built and are building a 338 RUM and a 338 Lupua, respectively. I too want to build one. I was looking at the 338 RUM, because everything is currently there for the rifle, dies, brass, etc. However, after reading articles about your round, now I am wondering which caliber would be best for me, 338 Edge? I would like to shoot up to 1500 yards or so. I was looking at the 338 RUM with a 225 accu bond or similar weight Barnes triple x, maybe tipped , but have not shot those yet. I have had great luck with berger bullets and the barnes 3X bullet.

I want to put the Horus Vision, Raptor Scope 4-16x on the rifle. H-25 reticle.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Shawn, i was going to ask a similar question about the .338edge. TO get great long range performance, do i need to have a 30" barrel, or can something shorter work if i use it with the 300grn SMK?? The reason i ask is, i wonder how dificult and laborious it would be to carry a 16LB+ gun. Not all shots would be at exteded range.

I can tell you that I had a 26" edge and my accuracy was @ 2680 FPS. I could push it a little more but the rifle did not shoot as well. I'd say you'll be hard pressed to get 2800 fps out of a 26". More like 2700-2750 fps.

On a side note, none of the deer that I shot w/it complained of it being too slow!!

Do they ever complain about anything after being shot?

What was your load?

Guys a 30" tube is not a problem IMHO
