30-06 over 308

I don't know if this will help the gentleman who got this started 308 or 30-06. Here is some info that might help. Factory Hornady ammo 308 178 grain ELDX 2600 FPS still retains just over 1200 ft lbs of energy at 700 yards and the 1800 FPS Hornady claims is needed for proper bullet Expansion. ((This is adequate for elk)) The chances of a shot presenting itself this far is pretty slim. But it can happen. If you all ready have 2 308s then I would suggest 7 Mag or larger or go down to a 6.5 cal. Another option would be to invest on a good set of optics and the equipment needed to take shots like this on a live target. Dont get caught up on the caliber Of the rifle. Stay more focused on the ft lbs of kinetic energy that is needed for what you are shooting. Also stay focused on the FPS that is needed for proper bullet expansion. Hope this helps with your decision.
Where did you guide? I'm in Colorado.

Come on!

we are all rifle loonies! we KNOW how this will go .....

you have some .308s, you WILL build the perfect rifle in .30-06 and before its completed you'll be dreaming of and planning out your .300 Win Mag and by the time you get a good load worked up for the '06, you will be collecting the components for the next build....

and this time next year you'll be posting "I've got .308, .30-06, .300WM and .300WSM, I'm planning a .25/7mm/6mm/6.5mm build what stock/action/barrel/mounts/scope/trigger should I get.... etc etc etc etc..... "

have fun! shoot good!

(right now, my browser has 4 open tabs on Gunbroker pages and 6 open to gunsinternational pages.... its a disease, there is no known cure....)
I think you should build a 28 Nosler

A friend years ago left his ammo 1500 miles back home. The closest store was in a small town with a gas station and a cafe. The "Cook" was a reloader, shooter and shot a 30-06. He gave my buddy 50 rds and a free breakfast. At the end of the hunt we stopped and gave his wife a $100 tip. Showed him a big 4x4 buck and the grin on his face was priceless.
Probably any cabin you end up in will have a box of 30-06 shells

He's already got .308 bullets and casings in -06 are so much easier to find than 28 Nosler. I'd go with the 06 or and 06 improved and gain around 150fps with the same casing and platform. My gunsmith friend in Calhan shoots an -06 Ackley Improved with a 26" barrel and gets about 3,000 fps from 190 grain bullets. I'd think that would be good enough for the -06 platform.

Lueders, Abilene and Cisco in Texas. I used to hunt in Colorado just North of the four corners. Combine Pass. Very beautiful ( No Sand LoL )
Know all those places. I was raised in Ralls, Texas. My brothers are all still there. What's it cost to hunt Hogs down there, and do you have a place I can bring a seriously handicapped veteran friend to hunt them? His name's George Pilsberry and they had to put rods in every one of his vertebra from his pelvis to his neck, so he's pretty restricted in his mobility, but he'd love to go hog hunting.

I've got about 1500 Sierra 180 grain, 500 200 grain Sierras, 500 200 grain Speers and around 1000 180 grain Speers on hand right now. But I'd still like to experiment with the Hammers. Using IMR 4350 I get 2600 from the 200 grain bullets and 2680 more or less from the 180's. I'm experimenting with Superformance in 168, 180 and 200gr. bullets now.

Please let us know how that Superformance development goes, as there is so little published data out there.

Sorry for my apparent snarkiness ealier, my Nuggets were losing at the time. I believe in gamechangers although rare but I'll have a look into the new Hammers. cheers

Oh ok I got ya. Thank you sir. Now I see the reasoning on the 30-06. Yes that would be A good Choose. The 28 Nosler is probably a very good Caliber but very hard to find ammo. If I was going to start from scratch on a full custom hunting rifle say for Moose. I do believe that is the largest animal in North America. (( I Have been wrong before )) I would build a 7-300 Win Mag Shooting the 195 Berger's. 300 WM brass is everywhere. Keep that build around the 15# Mark or so. 1500 ft lbs of kinetic energy and just over 1800 FPS @ 1400 yards. I Thank that would be efficient.

That would work. But you'd be really stuck if you lost your ammo or(God forbid) ran out. The -06 is easy to find and the Ackley Improved version is designed to use regular 06 and spit out an improved casing. No ammo issues there. And when I get the chance to test the 200 grain Superformance loads, I let you guys know what I find out. I already know it works well with 168 grain Hornadays. When I test them, I'll chronograph them at the same time, in both 22" and 24" barrels. I got my initial load for the 200 grain from Handloader Magazine's latest edition. The load was for Federal's Terminal Assent 200 grain bullet, and I'm sure they were conservative.

Nice yes I do believe that's just south of Plainview. Look up (( www.holtoncattlellc.com )) Paul Holton would be the gentleman to speak with. Beautiful Christian family. He would be able to give you up to date prices. Unknown Amount of acres to hunt. Probably over 100,000 total. He has different plots if that's what you want to call them. If your friend is a disabled vet then look up (( Brothers Keepers )) Jack Fanning. He has a passion for helping and honoring other veterans, first responders, and their families.

From The ballistic data going way back to Hornady Vol 2 ( Circa 1970) 50.4 grns 4350 IMR or H not specified , developed 2600fps using a 165 grn,. Spire Point bullet in a 308 Win. MAX LOAD . see page 208 ; vs 55.7 grns of 4350 (H or IMR not specified ) was a MAX LOAD that developed 2900 fps in a 30-06 see page 224. So ,If the longer length of the standard action, the slightly longer pull of the bolt , and the extra 4 or 5 ounces in weight are not a super big deal, I would choose the 06 . However ,if the goal is build a super light mountain rifle, then weight really is a big deal, then choose the .308 . Of course , if you want that rifle to feel lighter , and you want to shed 6 to 8 ounces really fast, Take off your wrist watch. Just My Humble opinion. Thank Guys

That is a great answer to the question at hand. I totally agree. Stay focused on kenetic energy needed and invest in good optics. Most people don't need a better gun they need better optics and fundamentals of marksmanship. That said, as one other person has already said, this is a terrible addiction with no end in sight. LOL😂 Why own one when you could have two or three or more. The endless pursuit of the perfect gun...🤔 Now for the next build???😂

I have over a dozen rifles that have never fired a single factory load so I may be incredibly biased in this but I would go with a 30 Nosler properly throated for 215 Bergers. You'll have a significant seperation between it and the 308 at that point with the best case design to sling the heavies without stepping up to a RUM or 300 Norma.

Thank you, sir. Ralls is about 50 miles southeast of Plainview, and 28 miles east of Lubbock. I was actually raised at Farmer, Texas, which was a school, Gin and store. There's almost nothing there, now. I'll check both of these sites out.
