Berger VLD load for 300 RUM

Looking at playing with the Berger VLD's in my 300 RUM. I have heard that the 168's are the way to go, but what bullet, powder, grain of powder are you having success with? Brand new to reloading so bear with me. This will primarily be a Coues deer rifle, with some elk and mule deer mixed in. I am a little concerned with the 168's for elk, but can build a whole new round if need be if the 168's do indeed fly best. Accuracy is far more important to me than is velocity. My rifle is a Christensen Arms with a 26" bull barrel. Thanks in advance for the help, any and all input is appreciated.

Get 168-210 grain and try them. From what I have broswed on this forum, people will say go with the 210s.

Might wanna check you BC numbers on the 210s again. The 168 is great if you are shooting a 308 win. But thoses big magnums really show what they got when you shoot the long , heavy, bullets. If your rifle has a 1-10 twist your good to go. They would work on everything just fine and you wouldnt need multiple drop charts.

JPRITT, I was a little surprised when people told me they recommended the 168 for the very reason you brought up. Just what I heard from a couple people. I'd much rather have one all around load - that's the reason i bought the RUM in the first place.

I use 96g Retumbo and the Berger 210 VLD. Shoots very well. I only have a 600y range here so haven't tried it any further. It'll shoot through a 1/2" mild steet plate at the 600y line...

I called Berger bullets and then sent Walt Berger an email asking about the 168 VLD. Walt himself sent me a quick reply for my 300 WM with load info suggesting I use the 168 VLD for my rifle. If I were you, I would call and also send him an email. He's a super nice guy who will spend the time to answer your questions. Just a suggestion.

The 168'2 b.c. is poopy. You might as well trade your 300 in for a .308 if your gonna shoot those thinks. Take advantage of the boomer and shoot the 210's.

i shoot the 210 out of mine using 93.5gr of H1000 getting 3125 out of a 30" barrel. groups well under 1/2" moa

Well you guys are confirming what i originally thought. The 210's with their "non poopy" (thanks mechanic) BC seem to be the ticket. I emailed Berger earlier in the week but haven't heard yet. Anyone else? What about primers? Federal 215's?

Berger seems to be all the rage when it comes to BC but I'm not sure why.

Sierra's 210 SMK has a higher BC and their 240gr SMK is even higher (.711)

Hornady's 208 A-Max is higher also @ a listed BC of .648

So what's all the excitement about Berger VLD's which normally shoot best when jam fit into the rifling? The others all shoot well when loaded off the rifling AND have higher BC's.

Varmint Hunter, I was specifically looking into the Berger's because of their supposed performance on game, from what i have heard they are devastating. The Match Kings i have been told to stay away from (for hunting). Plus, Sierrra says they are not intended for hunting... that's enough for me. I didn't know the Hornady's had that high of a BC - Thanks for the info, makes perfect sense to me. I will definitely give them a shot.

Varmit Hunter, I could be wrong but I believe the listed BC for the 210 VLD is .64 and the listed BC for the 210 SMK is .62.
