7mm Rem. Mag vs 300 Win. Mag

Either one I will be using will have a JP brake. So that makes recoil irrelevant. As for higher BC going to the 7  I am using 215 Bergers in the 300 win with a G1 BC of .696. 19 big game kills this season all the way out to 1285 yards. I don't feel I am giving up any BC over the 7's. I also have the option to go with the 230 Berger OTM with a .711 BC or the 230 Target with a BC in the .740's.

The difference in powder between the two ain't going to make much difference to any of our bank accounts. What is more important to me is the good brass available for the 300 Win., also the shelf selection of match grade ammo and the down range energy the 300 win will deliver.

I like both the 300 win and the 7mm Rem. But through my eyes anything the 7mm will do the 300 will do also and maybe even a little better.

The Differance in this disscusion, for me anyway, is that you guys that live out west have vast expances to shoot accross need and can make better use of the 300's capabilities where us guys in the east around more forested areas do not get the 600-700 hundred yard shots nearly as often so the 7mag lets us take advantage of that opurtunity as well as not being over kill for the 400 and under Whitetail shot.

The difference between the 7mm and 300 is minimal and they are both excellent rounds. You can't go wrong either way. At this point it's a toss up and it actually down to personal preference! Personally I prefer the 300, and it's because I feel better with a larger bullet being sent down range at a moose at ranges past 600-700 yards even though the 7mm is capable. I actually have both right now, a Remington 700 7mm mag and a 300. Wsm. My brother will be buying my 300 so I can build a regular 300 win mag. The 7mm will be upgraded and have everything planned out just waiting till I can comfortably afford to put out the cash. I'm in college so it will be a while, but it will all turn out good! I have a night force NXS and PST already, figured scopes first guns later

I am new to big game hunting. I went to Shilen Rifles for tour Sat. I asked the venders there,if there was a rifle I could buy that I could shoot in compititions, long distance and hunt with. I was given .30-.378 Sako. My DSC friends I e mail this to said NOOOO. So ,what I found out at Shilen, there barrels are like a blue printed engine. The bullet go through with out any gas going pass. The rifle I will buy at Cables, where it is rem.,Ruger,Weatherby, .300 mag. It chatters down the barrel, I interpret this as slop?? So,how many here have after market barrels vs original barrels?? Doed it matter??

Which is better for 600-700yd deer shots? Whats the differance in recoil? Which do you perfer and why?
7mm Rem Mag vs 300 Win Mag. Ok 7Mag 168 Berger VLD bullet 3100 FPS at the muzzle BC .617 @ 800yrds has 1400 Ft-Lbs and 1950 FPS. Ok. In the same condition the 300 WM I recomend the 190gr VLD BC .570 2900 FPS at muzzle. 800yrds 1700fps 1250 Ft-Lbs. The 7mag wins in FPS and Ft-Lbs. The farther you shoot the more the 7mag shines. I believe that every caliber rifle has it favorite grn bullet. You have to find a balance between BC and velocity for that cal rifle. I would not give up 200 FPS for 20 more BC. So if you want to take full advantage of a 30 cal rifle you need the 300 RUM. That way you can shoot the 210 gr VLD at around 3100 FPS and a BC of .631 That way you are in the same FPS and BC as the 7mm RM. Now the 30 cal rifle wins. But only in the 300 RUM form. Not in the 300 WM form. I shoot a 260 Rem. 27" Kreager barrel 1-8 twist. 140grn VLD. 2825fps. I killed a 180 lb hog at 997yrds with this gun. No he did not stop in his tracks. It took 2 rounds a total of 280gr of led. 1 bullet hit the heart the other the lung. The heart was in pieces. I have a 7mm RM Sendero. I love it. I got it for shootin elk size game and bigger. I haven't got to take any game with it yet but I shoot it every now and then to check its accuracy. It hold a 2.5"-3" group at 700yrds if I do my part. I'm sure that group will change whin my heart is racin with a elk in my cross hair. I would study your game animal more than the gun. Find out how much Ft-Lbs it take to kill the animal and how many FPS the bullet has to travel for it to perform properly. Most VLD bullets have a 1300 FPS min. So match the FPS with the energy it takes to drop your target. I use 600 Ft-Lbs and no less then 1300 FPS for deer. On elk I've read it takes 1000 Ft-Lbs. So I will use the 1000Ft-Lbs and 1300Fps rule. This has all was worked for me, even on a yot I shot with my AR at 605yrds with a 75gr Hornady bullet. I hope this helps. Sorry so long.

]The difference between the 7mm and 300 is minimal and they are both excellent rounds. I currently own and shoot both but the 300 is where I'll put my money. I feel a little more comfortable with a larger bullet being sent down range. The BC of the 215's eliminate the topic of higher by bullets with the 7mm until those 195's come out. But for now the 215 being pushed 2850+ will do the trick.

215grn great BC. Only prob is Berger doesn't make it for a huntin round. It's only for paper. Berger needs to change that. gun)

The only date I can find is for a 220grn bullet at 2800 FPS. So if you have a 28" barrel 2900 FPS is very possable. And with a BC of .696. That would be awesome. But again. Berger needs to develop this bullet for huntin. Not just paper.

Not a hunting bullet? Interesting....

For years the Berger bullets now known as "hunting bullets" were labeled as "Target bullets". Labels are sometime irrelevant. performance is what counts

Yes sir the dif between the 7mm RM and the 300 WM is minimal. I did find on Hodgons reloadin book that with 81gr of Retumbo powder and a 24" barrel 2800 fps is achieved. So if the barrel is 28" long 2900 FPS is posable. The BC of the 215gn target bullet is .696 very good BC. If my 7 Mag had a 28" barrel instead of the 26" 3200 FPS is possable. 300 WM 215gr VLD 2900FPS 1000yrds 1700 FPS & 1375 Ft-LBS. The 7mm RM @ 1000yrds 168gn = 1775 FPS and 1175 Ft-LBS. These 2 rifles are very close. Its just the 7 Mag has 30% less recoil. Ill Take the 7 Mag. Now the 7 Mag with the 180gn VLD has a BC of .674 Muzzle FPS 3050. @ 1000yrds & 1250 Ft-LBS. There is only 75 Ft-LBS dif between the 168gn & the 180gn. Thats why I like the 168gn better than the 180grn. Either of these great rifles can do the job at long range. Its just the 7 Mag can do it with much less recoil and hit just as hard. I would have to try the Target bullets on game for myself. It would be interested to see how they work. But for now ill keep useing my 260 Rem 140 VLDs as my 1100yrd Deer rifle. 1100yrds = 1400FPS and 600 Ft-LBS. When and if this gun ever lets me down ill pull out my 7 Mag.

7mm Rem Mag vs 300 Win Mag. Ok 7Mag 168 Berger VLD bullet 3100 FPS at the muzzle BC .617 @ 800yrds has 1400 Ft-Lbs and 1950 FPS. Ok. 168 gr bullet 3100 fps out of a 7 RM? How long is the barrel? I've loaded for the 7 RM and the best velocity I got with a 160 gr bullet was 3150 out of a 24" barrel with a max load of RL17 The next fastest load was 3100 with a max load of Retumbo. My average max velocities with other powders and the 160's were about 3000.

In the previously sited thread, the OP shoots 215 Bergers out of a 28" barrel at over 3000 fps. The BC of the bullet is .696 The 215 weighs 47 br more than the 168 and has a much better BC. When comparing apples to apples the 300 WM beats the 7 RM hands down... not even close
