Xmas present for father-in-law

Ok guys, my fater-in-law wants a new pair of binos. He has an old pair of what looks like the first set of binos ever made (they're HUGE!), and wants a set that is more mid sized. He is not too much on the specs of things, but knows when something is cheap. So what I am wanting to get him is a decent pair ($300-$400) of 10x binos. I have some Nikon 12x and, although they are bigger, they aren't too big for him so what are your thoughts on what i should get?

A gift card and tell him to put that money towards a deposit on a pair of Swarovski's.

What will he be using them for? How mush will he be using them? Gift card at cabelas works but a trip to store and let him look thru several to see what he likes.
