Good evening,

Is it possible to machine a pre-64 CRF bolt face from standard to Magnum?
Is this a specialty of someone here or recommended?

Or am I just spending too much time dreaming up s#!^

Thank you for the knowledge in advance!

I think you would have to swap extractor claws as well. Midwest Gun Works has some complete replacement bolts but they cost a pretty penny. You might be better off trying to get a used replacement bolt as opposed to machining the one you have. Gunbroker or even ebay sometimes has stuff like that.

One of three solutions:

Buy a used bolt in the configuration you want. (expensive but factory)

Find a used magnum extractor for your bolt then machine the bolt face. You have to open up the rails for the magnum cartridges and possibly adjust the feed ramp. You'll need the magazine parts for the magnum also.

Machine both the extractor and the bolt face. Use a real qualified gunsmith not the parts changers. Shaping the extractor takes talent.

:)

Or option 4 just buy a new rifle.

Opening the bolt and modifying the extractor is not a problem for a good smith, before the reintroduction of the pre 64 mod 70's that was a very common practice, when a customer just had to have a pre 64 action on a custom rifle, 30 odd some years ago one would take whatever pre 64 they could find, opening up old Winchester mausers and enfields was very common, being able to do so was more of a requirement of a good smith than anything else, often time one could use a extractor from a Springfield or Enfield when finding a replacement for the old winchesters,

Opening the bolt face and changing out the extractor of a pre 64 Model 70 Winchester should be a piece of cake for a reputable gunsmith, they have been doing it on 98 Mausers and pre 64 Model 70's since before my time.

A couple more things you'll need to do to get it to feed correctly. You might need to have the feed rails opened up and you'll need a magnum magazine follower.

Again…things a good gunsmith can do for you.
