Why No Love For 270 Ackley Improved?

The powders we have today along with the new high bc bullets were not available to MR. Ackley along with the ability to get a fast twist barrel

PO Ackley might have changed his mind if he had today's powders and bullets.

Yes i know he didnt have 600 bc bullets in 1-8 twist barrels and relaoder 19.

What he actually said was you could only get 8-12% improvement on the 270 win. He said go improve the 250 savage becauae youll get 30% improvement.

8-12% velocity improvement? That is the difference from a 30-06 to a 300 win mag. I think you will agree that that is worthwhile.

The reason the 280 Ackley looks so good compared to the 280 Remington is because the 280 Remington was ran at a lower pressure. Run the 280 Remington at same pressure as 280 Ackley and there isn't much of a difference. The 270 Winchester is already ran at a higher pressure so ackleying it just doesn't gain a whole lot.
Short and too the point, also spot on. With an Ackley you end up with a round that doesn't feed as well, you never see a dangerous game rifle with a 40 degree shoulder, and next to no gain in velocity unless you run higher or over pressure loads. Most of Ackley's performance gains were from running significantly higher pressures, and not near as much from the change in case shape. If you want proof, run the loads through Quick Load.

Agreed.
