They are excellent scopes IMO, and can be had for $450. 18x with fine duplex is still plenty of power for 1K +. Just another option if your looking for a Leupold on a budget. The 6-18's were my first LR scopes untill I finally saved enough to pick up a Leupold MK4, 4.5-14x50 LR, but I eventually traded it for my vx3 6.5-20x50 LR that I currently have now. 14x with regular duplex just wasn't what I wanted in a LR scope after using it for a year or so. Not quite enough magnification for me personally at 1K and the regular duplex covered up to much of the target.
I would keep an eye out on this site or benchrest central for used Leupys at a good price. If your patient, you can find some really good deals... You cant go wrong with a used leupold. There warranty is not limited to the original buyer... I feel ya on the budget issue... I was in your shoes about 5 years ago. I"d like to get a NF, but I'm on a 22 year olds budget with a house payment, among all my other bills, and a wife now, LOL. Theres nothing wrong with the VX2, 6-18x40 target, fine duplex scopes either. I have 2 of them currently. One is on my 7 RM, the other is on my 300 WBY. Neither of them need special bases to reach 1150 either.
