What is your best LR Buck?

My biggest buck to date and longest shot 612 yards

This was my first long range kill at 619 yards with a factory CZ 550 in 7mm rem mag!

Here is my best LR buck, but not my biggest, and my furthest. The biggest one (mounted) was taken at 813yds in 2004 and the furthest was 1006yds in 2010. I also threw in my furthest moose at 454yds in 1994. The biggest one was shot with a 300RUM using 180gr Ballistic Tips at 3350fps, the furthest one was taken with a 6.5-300wm using 140gr Amax's @ 3230fps, and the moose was shot with a 358STA using 250gr Hornady's at 3050fps. I started building my own guns shortly after the gunsmith screwed up my 358STA build in the early 90's. I built the other two guns myself.

I almost didn't shoot the one on the wall. He looks much bigger than his 26 1/2" width but I kept looking at how far past his ears his horns were and knew something was off. It was a last light shot and I left him until morning to go get him because he walked into some timber after the shot. I found him 20yds in the timber the next morning. It was September 13th and it snowed that night. It was actually raining hard by the time I got down to my truck and I left my dirt bike running, using the headlight, until I got a lantern lit. Luckily I killed that buck because my bike fell over with the gun on the handle bars and buried the muzzle in the mud. I didn't have a cleaning rod with me so my hunt probably would have been over with anyway.

This is my longest range, last day of the hunt in 2014. 350 yards with a 25-06 loaded with 110 g accubonds over 4831 for a muzzle velocity just under 3100 fps. I passed on an unsteady shot off a pile of rocks at 550 and belly crawled in the snow to get on him.

This is the biggest, inches wise, at 176 gross but with the extra point in the back he is 135 net. Shot him at about 60 yards when he stood up out of his bed with the same 25-06 in 2010.

This was my first long range big game animal. I took it in 1989 @ 649 yards with a 30.06. Just got very lucky, trust me. But after that I was hooked.

Honest question, how did you get the yardage back in 89? Did you have an optical rangefinder or were there laser rangefinders on the market then?

Actually, that is a great and honest question. My son and I went back 4 years ago and sat in the exact same spot I had shot from and ranged across the canyon to the same bush that he was standing by on this open hillside. Pretty easy to range. I do have to admit, I was glad I had two friends to witness the shot because everyone in town called me a liar with a little wink. I still get that on my bull every now and then if you know what I mean. It's good to have someone with you for a number of reasons. Anyways, that's the honest truth.
