I have never used Varget powder. Has anyone used this for a 7mm Mag or 30-06 or both? I have heard good and bad on this powder. I am think about using this for both guns. Is there a better powder that I could use? I am also thinking of IMR4350.. Thanks

That's correct! Also, let me tell you friend, Varget is a great powder if used where it's called for. :)

I just loaded some 7-08 120gr ballistic tips with Varget to try it out. Used CCI 250 BR primers.

Eaglet, do you have a primer preference for Varget? The 250's work good with H-414, so that's why I used them.

    specweldtom,

I've only used it with FEDERAL MATCH GM210M PRIMERS, on my son's 308. with great accuracy. I also like the CCI 250, but never used it with Varget. Let us know!

Varget is a little fast but might be ok with light bullets, IMR4350 would work better.
H4831 and RL22 is a better choice for the heavier bullets in both cartridges.

Varget is the best powder I have found for 7mm-08 and 120 bullets and Fed 210's. Light mtn rifle loves that load.

    Varget

    gnab:

Varget is excellent powder; one of my favorites. I do not shoot 7mm, but I have used Varget with excellent results in 30.06, 308, 223, and 8mm Mauser.

In 30.06, my favorite load is 50.0 grains of Varget behind a 150 grain bullet. This load produces about 2900 F/S velocity. With a 150 grain Seirra Matchking bullet, it can shoot 1/2 MOA groups from my Winchester Model 70 hunting rifle.

My favorite primer, by far, is Winchester. It is extremely dependable, and enters the primer pockets smoothly with minimal hangups.

I have been reloading for 38 years, and have been using Varget for at least 8 years.

The only downside of Varget is that, being an extruded powder, it does not meter as smoothly as comparable ball powders such as 748, H414, 2230, etc. However, it burns with exceptional consistency, and generally produces excellent accuracy.

I hope this information helps you.

One last pointer: don't trust loading data you get from any unofficial source, including me. Check the above load against the Hodgdon Data Guide.

Best of luck! I would love to hear about your results.

    rbaldwin,

Welcome to Long Range Hunting! Enjoy this great site that we'll also take avantage of those 38 years of reloading. :) I have also been reloading since I was 17, that's been 36 years off and on. I still have a lot to learn from the young and the old.

Don't you know gray hair gives you personality, adds to the good looks and stands for wisdom? You've got a long way to go before
you get the good looks; assuming you'll live long enough. Which
I'm not sure you'll make it specially if you keep talking to me that way... ;) :D :D LOL
