Used Remington 40-X

Looking for some advice on a used Remington 40-X rifle with Kevlar stock, 220 Swift,and no scope. The rifle is 1988 vintage, original equipment and some throat wear which needs about a 1/2 in setback to clean it up.

Is it worth the buy at $ 500 and how are these recievers for a project gun or to be used latter.
