I called Hodgdon today and they emailed me this data. Sorry if it's hard to read. I couldn't get the same format on here as my email had. Hopefully Lerch and I will have a little to test out next week /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif!!!!

Well Bill, those numbers look pretty disappointing except for the 50 BMG /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Turns the 7s into 270 Wins with the 140s same with the 338 RUM gets it down to the 338 Win velocity.

Wonder if a little more could be used. Usually Hodgon is pretty conservative.....

Do you think it will match 872 in your AM?

Thanks for the extra effort and the informative post. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I don't know if it will or not. I would give up 100-150fps to get temp. stability. There can be as much as 100fps difference in our 270 AMs using the 872 from summer to now. We would even notice a differnce from the cool morning to warm afternoons as far as primer flow and extraction.

Checking the Sierra manual for the really huge case 30-378wby with the really heavy bullets it is giving as good or better velocities than the old H870.

Hopefully this is a big case, heavy bullet, long barrel powder

I don't understand why the stopped at such low pressures for so many cartridges. If you look at the 300 RUM data, except for the 200 grain load (using that bullet it's worthless data anyway), those are starting load pressures.

The best example is the 220 grain load. From their current manual:

Starting load for H870: 101 grains, 2818 fps, 54,800 psi.

Max load for US869: 101 grains, 2875, 55,200 psi.

The good news is it looks like in this round with heavy bullets the same powdercharge results in basically the same pressure but nearly 60 fps more velocity.

Looks like it has potential to me. The only question is why they stopped at 101 grains--it certainly wasn't because of pressure. I have a hard time believing they couldn't fit more than 101 grains of ball powder into the case....

Oh well, if it's as accurate and consistent as H870 was and is really temperature stable, I'd be happy if it can just come fairly close to the velocities H870 provided as nothing I've found that satisfies the above can.

So if you look closely enough at the data, I think it looks pretty promising. Also, except for the Weatherbys and BMG, all those are from a 24" barrel.

Did Hodgdon give any clue as to when dealers will have this powder on shelves? Seems I read Jan 06 somewhere here. Would like to try it in the 7 rum as I am recently wanting to try some new loads for it. Looks like it should fill the case up pretty good.

I don't know when dealers will have. Hodgdon has it now, they just don't have the packaging yet. I would guess sometime between Jan and March.

Someone try this powder in something like a 22-243AI w/heavier bullets and let me know how it pans out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Am I cheap or what? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Roy,
I would be willing to say that it's too slow for that cartridge. I use H4350, H4831 and RL22 in my friends rifle that I load for. We're shooting the 75gr A-MAX mostly but are going to try the 80gr SMK.
