Type of steel for target

I use either ar550 or ar500 targets either 3/8 or 1/2. For
9mm and 22 pistol targets I use 1/4 ar400 targets. Can't beat ar550/500 for longevity

Makes sense why I can't hurt mine I found out they use 550. I thought it was 500.

I want to install steel plates on my range at 400 & 500yds. Have never made such targets before. Will be shooting mainly Barnes mono's in 6.5 . 120 & 127 grs from 260 thru 264 mag rifles. What type of steel will hold up best & what thickness should I consider?

Any flat steel 1/4 inc thick or better.. At 500 yards ,a 6.5 hasn't got the poop to hit hard enough to damage it

For a rifle, most targets recommend a minimum of 100 yards for steel.

You can consider a Rubber Dummy which is fun.

Yes normal steel will get you by. I did that for a long time. As long as I didn't shoot it closer than 300 yards it lasted a long time.

This is just plain 3/8 steel shot at 700 yards with .243, .260, 6.5prc, 6.5cm, 7mm, 6mm and then my 30-06 with 178grain eld-x. They carry a good thump still at 700 yards.

That is some dings. I had .75" or 1" so that probably helped. I shot through several but they were cheap. Now that my friend cuts targets it's all at 500 but mild can be used. That's some good dings for that distance I didn't think it would do that. Gonna have to get another sheet just to look impressive when I shoot it with the big rounds.
