I seen several posts here of people using RL 17 with 280AI and other calibers such as 7mag. My loading manuals either do not have the 280AI listed or the RL17 powder listed. I have downloaded the Nosler load data but they do not mention the RL17. Anyone know which load manual has this or anyone got some info on the 140, 160, and 168 bullets using the RL17?

I have loaded my 280 Rem with RL-17 with good results in both accuracy and velocity, however I have not loaded for the 280 AI. My opinion is that the slower Alliant powders, 19,22, 26 etc. would work better in the AI. If you get on the Nosler web site you will find that they do show RL-17 loaded with 150 gains bullets in the AI.
51 gains starting load with 55 max.

Try IMR 7828 SSC... With the 140 and heavier bullets, you will get better results than with a faster powder like RL17. You will also be able to get closer to a full fill ratio with the slower powders.

Nosier's on-line load data lists RL17 for the 150's.

I've seen a few guys post about the 280ai and RL17 in my internet surfing. I've never really paid that much attention, but I do recall some having success with it.

I don't personally think it's a good match. But if you wanted to try it, I'd probably suggest the 140 or 150 grain bullets max.

Nosler does have loading data using R-17 with their 150gr and 168gr LRAB bullet but you have to click on 150gr or 160-168 gr bullet to get it online

I do use R-17 in my 280AI also IMR-7828ssc both with Fed 215 primer and my barrel is 27" long and it is long throated. I'm not sure my data going to help you. With the 180gr Berger's I'm using H-4831sc.

I shot 162 amax's and rl 22 with cci200's in one 280ai and 168 bergers and rl 17 with cci 200's in another. The 168 and rl-17 was faster they both shot good under 1/2 inch at 100 and good out to 1400 yards.

try RL-26 in your 280 AI. it is a better match for that chambering.
you can flirt with 7 rem mag velocities with RL-26 and 168 VLD's.
start at around 58 gr. and work up (I think i went to 61 gr).

I've found the best accuracy with Retumbo, however.

I tried RL 17 in my .280 AI years ago, after reading others positive reports. My experience wasn't that great with 168gr Berger VLDs in a 28" Brux barrel, so I gave up on it. I didn't get the velocities others reported, and I could reduce my ES/SD to a satisfactory level. Just my experience, and it is what it is...

I hear a lot of good reports about RL 26, and that might be a good powder to try. I may some day, but I haven't yet.

I'm using RL17 in my 280AI (also 6.5 rem mag, 30-06 & 375 Ruger). Get good accuracy, velocity and extreme spreads.

What I like is that I'm using less powder than RL22, RL25 etc. and the fill density suits my fancy

I'm shooting the 160 Accubond

Would you use regular, match, or Magnum primer
Rem 9.5M Magnum? Fed 215? Fed 210 ?Fed 210M?

I'm using magnum Fed 215 primers with RL26 in the 280ai. RL17 might do better with standard LR primers.

With RL26 would I need the magnum primers such ad Fed215? I have Fed210 and Rem 9.5 and CCI200.

In order to use the 215M you would have to FIND some lol. Must be nice to have enough to actually shoot them. I have never been a hoarder but after this last fiasco with the 215 I'm gonna become one if I ever see 215s again.
