New Mexico Unit 49 with my 76 y.o. f-i-l

I was supposed to hunt Unit 49 two years ago but got deployed to Iraq. My father-in-law got so excited about it back then he put in for an out-of-state tag so he could hunt with me this year. Well as luck would have it, he drew and I didn't. He's pretty tough but I think not as tough as the terrain in 49, so I'd like to get a jump on things by scouting now. If anyone has any tips on general areas to start scouting (NW, SW, NE, etc. or terrain regions if possible) I'd love to hear from you. You can reach me off-line at [email protected].
