I just bought a 700 Long Range with the HS Precision stock in a 300 RUM. I want to load the Barnes TTSX in 165gr, and I have no idea what powder to start with. Any responses will be greatly appreciated. No comment is too basic, since this is the first caliber I`ve loaded that takes half a can of powder per shell:)

I would get one of these powders to start as all will work, but one will probably outshine the other. R25, R26, imr7828, imr7977, H1000, Retumbo. With a 26" barrel you should be able to get 3400-3500fps with ease and maybe more. Personally I wouldn't shoot anything less than a 180 grain projectile, and prefer 200 grains and up for the 300RUM.

Don't sell yourself short with a 165 in the RUM, especially a Barnes. Go 200 and up grain bullets with Retumbo in Nosler/Norma brass since it's readily available, and honestly it's better brass than RP RUM brass. Fill the case up with Retumbo and drive heavies with that beast. A lot of guys have success with RL33 to push them faster.

Another vote for the 200+ bullets in 300 RUM. Retumbo and H1000 are probably the 2 most commonly used for this caliber. I have had great luck lately with RL 26 in a Sendero. Jury is still out on temp stability but so far so good.

i have that exact rifle and this is what i shoot from it anymore, works for what i do with it. works well. just posted this in another thread.
