Because it started life as a Magnum, it is more than likely a large shank. To tell, measure the length of the barrel nut. Large shank barrel nuts measure 5/8" (.625") in length and the small shank measure 7/8" (.875"). Stocky's stocks offer some great stocks for good prices. Check them out as well. Welcome to the red headed step child of rifles. I am currently working on rebarreling a Savage Mod 12 right now. I ordered my barrel from Lothar Walther. 28" 1:12, 6 grove, stainless steel, pre-threaded, pre-chambered (.308), cut and thread for my break, and shipped for $500 even and some change. They use a harder stainless (550SS, German Steel) that is to last longer than the normal barrels (Chromoly or 416SS). They ship quickly also. I know a guy that fits all of his Savages with Lothar Walther and he and his wife have won F-class shoots. Says a little something for their quality. Can't wait to get it. My next choice would be Shilen and then Lilja. Tank
