How To Pick a Powder???

humm...that one doesn't make any of Noslers listed powders for each caliber...

I will readily admit I don't know a lot about burn rates of even the powder I use. I tri=y powders I have that work with other caliber and so far it has worked ok. I normally only loaded to "MOA of dead deer". I have just recently tried to better than that.

I do like Nosler's data, but I wonder if they even tested some powders. With RL26 being fairly new, I don't know that they had done much testing with it?

I do know that RL26 is really good in my 300WM, .264WM, .243 Win, and my brother's .270 win. I haven't tried it yet in my .280 Rem but it looks like it should be great.

I've never loaded for 300WSM, so I'm not sure about it in that cartridge.........it may be too slow a powder for it but........? And I'm just assuming it would be worth a shot in the 6.5-06 since it does so well in the .270 Win.

I use Quickload these days to help determine what powder to use. I like 90% or more case fill. RL26 is usually at the top of the list for the majority of the cartridges I load for. I don't have QL at work or I'd run it for the 300WSM and 6.5-06 to see if RL26 would be a possible option.

3stooge, I don't think they do either...seems I've seen somewhere it says that. I think they are using a program to run their numbers.

But it's some place to start getting a feel for starting points.

I've seen the same thing about 90%+ being best. If that is the case R22 would be the best because it fill all 4 of the calibers in question.

I went back and looked at Nosler info and and all bullets weights I use in all 4 calibers R16 is on the list. Two calibers list the R16 as the potentially most accurate. 165-168 grain bullet in 300wm and 123-125 bullet in the 6.5-06. R22 is on nearly all. The H and IMR are all over the place.

But I would really appreciate it if you could run those two calibers...300wsm and the 6.5-06 to see.

I know the H and IMR powders are very tempaterture stable but I'm not sure I need it to be for my style of shooting. Blasting steel and medium to long range hunting (600 yard max).

I'm gonna try the re23 you can find it, it's a tad slower than 22 and it has the additive for some temp sensitivity read the thread in ACC Shooter from a Alliant powder associate

I've tried RL23 in a few different cartridges and it runs Faster Burning rate than RL22, not slower. They should have called it RL21 not RL23 ,Just my experience.

Below are QL results. Note - didn't include all the powders it shows, just the ones with the upper velocities. Also, there could be other good powders that are below the 90% fill threshold that I set........ (like RL-16 in the .264 WM is just under 89% fill so it didn't end up on the list but might be ok).

Those QL results are based on setting the parameters for min case fill of 90% and max case fill of 108%. The order they are listed are from fastest to slowest.

I simply input various bullets, seating depths, and case capacities. Of course your actual chosen bullet and seating depths will change the results, but I think it will give an idea for what powders are showing up in each cartridge result.

I bolded the powders you were interested in (and bolded RL-26 since that is one I figured might be a possibility). Looks like of the powders you already have, R22 might be worth a try.

Yes. Thank you. RL26 "could" make a big difference in FPS.

I was surprised that everyones "go to" powders were so low/slow on the list in each caliber.

Thanks again for the post and infor.

That's praying for lottery kind of luck. RL 16 may be on every load data chart for your calibers but it's definitely not the best choice in larger magnums. It wouldn't be a powder I'd use when others are so much better. I'd look at a slower burning powder like H1000 or RL 26 for the 300's.

Thanks Xcal,
Your right...I'm planning on picking up RL26 this weekend. All the info 3stooge provided had already convicted me I had made a poor choice.

I will be researching load data this weekend to see what I can find for the 300wm and 264wm. I drew a big public land exotic sheep hunt in Texas and those two will accompanying me on that trip.

IMR 7828ssc MIGHT work for all four cartridges .
But you might have better luck winning a lottery than having all four cartridges loving the same powder with your chosen bullet.

You might be making more work and disappointment than making a short cut.
It will. I use it in everything from my .25-06 AI up to my .300 Ackley.
