Help with 1/11.25 .308 barrel and ammo

Actually, The 308 rifles that GA Precision build almost all have a 11.25" twist and they have lots of success with 175 SMKs and 178 Hornady match.

So before the Amax went out the window I was running them in a 26 inch 308. Between the 2 there was always about 1 to 2 clicks more of elevation difference for the 178. I was actually running the 168 about 2800fps in that 26 inch barrel and the 178 seem to be about 25 FPS behind them. So I think the 168 to 180 is a real good load for the 308 when you look at retained energy and maximum distance. Generally I was a half inch at 100 and about 1moa at 1000. Wind was always and will always be a factor. Funny thing i sold the 308 and still have several loaded rounds for it. Been thinking about going back to that or a 7mm-08 for some rock/steal banging and getting rid of my 6.5 creed. It's just not capable of what I thought it could do interns of speed and distance when running a 140 or larger unless you using some ferry dust (RL26).

Run RL17 for maximum velocity (2886 no pressure and could go more) in your CM and use 140-143g bullets. Barnes Match Burners, ELD-m or ELD-x all work great to 1500. Realistically I wouldn't attempt to kill something beyond 500y with either a 6.5 or a 308 unless you make a good neck/head shot. Just my 2cents
