Fortunately, none of those Hurricanes have made it into the Gulf. If one does and they have to shut down the oil rigs, prices will probably get even higher. We have been lucky so far. Unleaded regular is $3.75 in my area, and I live within 25 miles of three refineries (2 Shell and one Marathon).

I vaguely remember under a dollar but my memory isn't as good as it used to be.

When I was in high school, a friend and I took a road trip. We passed through a town that was having a gas war (bet that's a term most have never heard) premium gas was $.24.9 I told my friend that I was going to fill up because I would probably never see gas that cheap again. I was right.

The Good Days. That was when gas was $0.17 a gallon. 1970-71.

In 1962 a Remington Model 742 had a list price of $161. Back then, oil was selling for only $2 bucks a barrel. That Remington 742 was selling for price 80 barrels of oil. Today that'd be somewhere like 80 X $90 a barrel or $7,200 bucks.

I am real old & can remember my dad carefully planning our weekend trips during WW II when there was gas rationing. Like coast downhill stuff.

I remember in 1971 there was a Hudson Gas station that was self-serve. Gas was 21.9 cents a gallon, and you put dollar bills into the machine. No station attendant. Cost $3 to fill my Chevy Vega. Of course, that was when I cleared $92 every two weeks as a rookie cop in New Orleans.
