Three or four nights leading up to the August full moon should be productive near waterIng / wallowing holes if the S TX sky stays clear. Night vision not needed...
These were June full moon:
downhill shot; head down, found the dreaded exploding corn
uphill shot; moving left to right into shadows, more exploding corn
uphill shot; found the exploding corn
My favorite 20 year old: Steyr Pro Hunter 30-06; Steyr rotary hammer - cold forged 23.6" barrel, glass bedded recoil lug, barrel full floated, VX III 4.5-14 x 40 A.O., shooting Nosler 150 Accubond @ 3,030 ish fps. = bang flop...
Aight! Thu, Fri, and Sat night look to hold some promise with partly cloudy skies. I'm countin' on the weather liar completely missing, again, and S TX offering clear skies and a bright hogicidal moon!
4 hrs on a baited full moon water hole. Not a pig to be seen. Finally left at 1 am. Moon sure did provide some good shooting light. Gorgeous night with a cooling SE breeze. Water and bait to my NE.
Well its been awhile since I had any full moon pigs. I got winded the 1/4 moon before last week's full. Then nothing for 3 nights of hunting the full moon. Then last Monday night they were at the water hole as I pulled up. I killed the engine quick and by the time I was ready to walk the 50 yards to the blind they were coming back. I shot a fat sow quartering away as she was walking off with piglets in tow. She was about 5' from disappearing into the brush when the 150 Accubond blew through her vitals. It was just about dark and she was over 50 yards from the feeder so I had no need to venture into the brush to find her.
Tonight I set up at one of the protein feeders where I have 120 yard shooting lane about 6 feet wide between the oak trees and shot this sow just as it was getting dark.
I've been having better luck on quarter moons lately. With a single 150 Accubond I shot these 3 little buggers at the same protein feeder as the last two sow pix above. Interestingly, the big sow(s) with them made a couple of moves to the shooting side of the feed pen but immediately backed away. I'm thinking the open gate spooked them as it was open the last time the dreaded exploding protein feed took out the red sow above. The gate has been closed due to cattle in the pasture.
