Gentlemen thanks for your indulgence. I am a 62YO retired USAF & AAL pilot gentleman farmer living on a small horse camp on the Brazos River 45 mi SW of Fort Worth, Texas. I have here to fore been a TDS reticle ( bdc with cross wind lines ) in S&B / Swarovski / Kahales on top of Blaser rifles hunter. Though I managed a 576 yard elk and a 671y hog my best shot was a 53 yarder. My worst shots are why I have pulled a chair up next to you experienced and FNGs to KEEP LEARNING. With this Socialism economics I don't know whether to go for a : 1) Savage 12F 6.5-.284, 2) Gunwerks 7 Rem Mag, 3) Grey Bull .264 Win Mag or have 4) Chris Mathews or 5) Shawn Carlock build me a 7 WSM with a 7oo Rem action , Kepplinger singe set trigger, Benchmark / ABS wrapped 1:8 sitting in a Bell & Carlson #2092 vertical grip ( basically same as a McMillan A2 ) sighted by either a BOTW Huskemaw or a John Burns Grey Bull Precision custom Leupold or a Kenton Industries turret on a Leupold 4.5x14. Internal Ballistics wise I believe in only moderately overbore calibres loaded in moderation, external ballistics = VLDs in my book while terminal ballistics or a two sided coin ; I believe in Barnes X bullets for close hunting and VLDs for long range.
I have not been bashful about my Q so let me know what you think please NOT what you feel...I get too much of that crap on the PC media. Thank you in advance for your time & attention. If like me , you talk faster than you type leave me your tel # & I'll call on my dime. Looks like I'm going to have to forego another cycle on the buying-a-new-truck schedule... I need a real LR rifle and some training. Let the ground school begin>>>

First off, welcome to the site! And thank you for your service to our country.

If it were me, I'd have Shawn build me a rifle. The 7WSM is a great round, I haven't played with it, but have played with the 300WSM and love it. Several folks on this site have had a 7WSM built with the intention of using 300WSM brass and necking it down. This is due to the higher quality brass available for the 300WSM.

Although Shawn hasn't built me an entire rifle, I have purchased some of his handy work in the way of custom dies, muzzle brake etc. I am completely satisfied with ALL my dealings with Shawn.

Good luck and welcome,
AJ

AJ good insight on the 7WSM brass! Shawn does seem to have a great reputation and gives of himself answering remarks here. Navigating these forums is a little daunting as we do not have very reliable internet speed with this dang Hughes net dish. It appear the 6mmBR & Savage Shooters forums are also run by good volunteers...what is your opinion of those or other sites ?

Hello and welcome! Well, I'll be honest in saying that my longest kill big game so far has been only about 350 yards... so take my advice with a grain of salt :)

6br seems to be a good site, knowledgeable guys. It seems to have a more bench rest crowd there (would make sense). I don't have much experience w/ savage forum however.

As far as your optics goes, it seems to be a general consensus to turn the turrets rather than relying on expensive custom reticles for extended ranges. a custom ret will be good for one atmospheric condition and one load alone. Now with the ready availability of good ballistic calculators it is easy to make your own drop charts for different loads or conditions.

You can have a very very good custom rifle built for a lot less than that gun werks rifle. I'd go w/ AJ's advice here too.

good luck, Mark
