Berger VLD Hunting bullets... For hunting

Im lost.

Why doesnt the op just back down the powder charge and seat the bullets to a C.O.A.L of 2.8".

Why doesn't he just seat them to .005" short of the mag length, and ladder test his powder from there? That's what' I'd do.

Sorry to learn about your disappointment in the VLD. Perhaps I missed it but I don't see anything in your post about the powder you're using. I load with RL17 and have no problems whatsoever.

I guess I have been lucky, I am shooting VLDs in 4 factory rifles. All are longer than the standard coal. I can load the magazine in all of them.

I do the same! If you want to have a repeater with VLDs than just do like madrunner said and then test also seating depth...

This is my method as well. I'll do a max charge work-up for several powders at 5thou under mag length, find one that gets me the velocity I want, and then tune it in.

I've only had one rifle that I couldn't make shoot well with VLDs. However, I have a few where I am running velocities lower than max. If they deliver the energy I need for my application, it's worth the trade-off (accuracy>velocity). IMO.
