What would be the optimum barrel length for a 22-250 shooting factory 55gr bullets. Want to keep one rifle I can just buy for.

I would think that your gonna gain velocity with a 26" but not to sure that it would add a lot of velocity with factory ammo ,so I'm guessing anything in the 22-26" range would work good without to much performance loss

Well, my Rem 22-250 will shoot 52 gr AMAX @ 4027 fps, 55 gr FMJs at 3797 fps, RP 55 gr Factories at 3678 fps, WW 45 gr Factories at 3998 fps, 60 gr Sierras at 3460 fps - unstable/shot like crap.

I would have to guess that 26" would be the "best" for a standard 22-250. My guess would be you'd give up 50ish fps with a 24" barrel. This is of course with sloppy factory chambers. A custom, tight-neck 24" Broughton 5c will probably toast my rifle. jm2c

sewwhat

whats your bbl length on your rifle? seems to shoot as fast as my swift with a 26" barrel. i only get 100fps better with 55g bullets, and your matching my speeds for the 52g bullets. just curious is all, and to what powders your using. my dad has a twin of my swift, (ruger targets). haven't done to much load testing with it, just 40g vmax at 4150fps, and 52g smk at an unkown velocity. both loads shoot .25" at 100 yards, it also has a 26" bbl.

Its a 26" barrel. I will check the load, but it is around 38 or 39 gr of Varget. With the 55 gr bullets, I think I was shooting 37.8 gr AA2520 to get almost 3800fps.

Just for comparison...I'm using a 16" heavy barrel (26" Varmint weight tube cut and recrowned) on a Savage Striker and getting 3325 w/ 50gr VM's using 35gr Varget. I can jack it up quite a bit more...but it shoots .5 MOA to 400 yards.
