6.5-284 is a nice cartridge. I would be hesitant to use it on elk. Im not saying it wont cause obviously it has many times. But elk are tough and a little bigger bullet would be recommend. Why dont you take a look at the 338. edge, 300. wsm or even the 7mm wsm.
