7 or 8 twist 22-250?

I'm looking to get a new 22-250 barrel for a 12 FV Savage that I already have. I'm planning on using this barrel on Montana p-dogs where the wind can make a real mess of a 500 yard shot. The rifle came with a 12 twist 22-250 barrel and it shoots the 53 gr VMAX just fine but it won't begin to shoot a 75 grain bullet.

Relatively speaking, the BCs of bullets that you can shoot out of a 12 twist suck compared to say an 8 or 7 twist. But I'm kind of wondering should I go with the 8 twist or the 7 twist or something else and why? Can I still shoot the 53 VMAX out of a 8 or 7 twist and not have it fly apart? Since there is never a free lunch, what do you give up when going with a fast twist versus the slow twist?

My solution... I have a 12 twist 223 to shoot the 53 gr Vmax. My 22-250 currently has a 14 twist that I will rebarrel to an 8 for the heavier VLD's. And no, I dont know what would happen to the 53 Vmax coming out of an 8 twist barrel @ 3900-4000 fps.

I have used the 53 v-max out of a 7 twist 223 at ~3050 and they shot ok, not as well as 69smk'd through. In a 22-250, unless you are wanting to use 90 grain bullets I would stick with an 8 twist.

i use savage 12s also and mine are 9 twist. i use 55s in the 223 and 69s in
the 22/250 which has been ai rechambered. the 69s work very well on pds at the distances your talking. ive not tried heavier bullets as i have an 8 twist 6mm for that.

With a 7 twist in the 22-250 you will be able to shoot the Berger 90 VLD's which are pretty sporty @ 500 yards. A 7 twist will be just fine with 75 AMAX's, also or any of the other bullets in the 70 - 90 grain weight. I have not not tried the 52's in a 7 twist to see if they will stay together with the 22-250. I vote for you to go with a 7 twist.
