6.5-06 AI 120gr Swift - Loads??

A final update to close this thread in case someone trying to work up an -06AI does a search....

I went back and did some seating depth tests on teh load above and tweaked out a bit bore accuracy and now I do not have to worry about the bullet pulling out and dropping powder at end of unsuccessful day of hunting.

130 gr Berger, 59.2 H1000, Federal 210M primer, lapua brass, 2930 fps, Jump to lands was higher than I expected at .150. Less than .5 moa repeatable and 1st cold clean shot dead on. Sweet!!!

Good job Aldon! Perseverance pays:D

I am assembling the pieces to make a 9 twist 6.5-270 Ackley Improved. I want a longer neck than I have on my 6.5-284 and 6.5 WSM(2)s. I spoke to the Swedish Chemist who developed Reloader 22 at the NRA Convention in Seattle shortly after it was released. It gets cold in Sweden in the Winter and this powder was tested in the cold. The Army chose Reloader 15 for its 308 sniper ammo because of its cold weather performance. I have fished with a man (Dennis Skailand) who worked for Aberdeen proving ground. He spent a month in Nome testing ammunition in the Winter. Then he went to Panama to repeat the tests.

With the 6.5-284 and 120 Ballistic tips and 130 Accubonds Vithavuori N-560 was at least 80 fps faster than 4000MR, Ramshot Magnum, Retumbo, Reloader 22, Reloader 25 or MagPro. I intend to test Winchester 780 further. I would expect similar results in the slightly larger case.

Have you considered the 6.5 Sherman? I shot an A.I. for years and then developed this cartridge a few years back. It will outperform the A.I. with about a 5% increase in capacity and has a far better neck than the WSM or 6.5/284. I have both a turned neck version and a no turn version. I can reach 3200' with 140's.......Rich

I can use a 25-06 Redding Bushing die for 6.5-270 Ackley. What can I use to size a 6.5 Sherman?

Both use the same parent and the Sherman is a few thou shorter overall length. It has less taper in the body and the shoulder is farther forward. I use custom full length dies for mine from Hornady.......Rich

My interest is in neck length. I want to use bushings to size about 2/3 of the neck and leave the rest unsized to center the case in the chamber. I can use different bushings for different brass and bullet combinations and adjust the neck tension.

I can use my assortment of bushings to go from .270 Win brass to 6.5 in steps

I will use a Wilson seater cut with the reamer.

I do not think that more case volume will equal more velocity. The VV N-560 powder is so efficient in the 6.5-284 that the larger .270 WSM case cannot surpass it and requires different powders to compete.

Can you get 3200' with a 26" barrel? I increased velocity over the A.I.'s that I had......Rich

This may be hard to read. Send me an e-mail and I will send you the spreadsheets for 6.5-284 and 6.5 WSM. Below is a section from the 6.5-284 data
All velocities are instrumental and usually at 15 feet. You can see that 3300 fps or at least 3280 possible with 56 -57 gr of N-560 propelling 130 Accubonds in at 26 inch barreled M-70. I use HBN coated bullets.

The same bullets in the same barrel by the same manufacturer with the same twist does not gain velocity with the WSM case. The velocity with a wide range of powders is equal or less. If there was a VV N-565 there might be an advantage. N-570 is slower than Retumbo so helps only with 140 and 160 gr bullets. I am experimenting with an 8 twist 28 inch 6.5 WSM barrel and N570 now.

I had the same pressure results as Dano in my AI. With the straight wall it sneaks up on you. I started with Win. 25-06 brass and 4831sc, then went to 7828. After about 2 or 3 loads, the primer pockets were gone. I found that Rem brass weighs about 6g more and seems to be tougher. I only have a 10' twist, so 120s or lighter for me. I could get 100s to 3500+ and 120s to 3200. 7828 got me there, but pressure was a bit high. I tried Hunter, and found velocity was there, pressure wasn't. No more pocket problems, but did get hangfires with standard primers. Went to mag. and all is well. This is with a 28" barrel. It is now my favorite shooter. Trajectory is very flat, about 21moa at 1000. Fun to shoot with the 123A-max.

WOW that is some pretty fast velocity with the 130's! I'm doing 3090 with the 130 scirocco II in my 6.5-06 springfield, using the N560 powder as well. I have plenty of neck clearance, so I may eventually switch from my current rem 25-06 brass to the lapua 30-06 brass, and with it I will probably swing a bit more velocity. However, it took some work getting sub-MOA with the scirrocco's, so I'm not looking forward to any more load development with this bullet.

Anyway, I was a bit confused with your posts, are you shooting a 6.5-WSM or a 6.5-06ai with 270win brass??

I am collecting parts for a 6.5-06. So far I have a Rock Creek 9 twist light weight fluted barrel and a Bell & Carlson thumbhole stock. I have ordered a 25-06 Redding bushing die.

I own two 6.5 WSMs and a 6.5-284. I want the neck length to partially resize that the 270 or 25-06 case allows. I have some 270 Nosler brass on hand. I also own a lot of WSM dies and a reamer but I have not found anything outperforms the 130 Accubond from the 6.5-284 case. The higher BC bullets just cannot be driven fast enough to shoot flatter than the 130 AB.

Varget will work for the 6.5/06 behind the 140gr bullets,,, but its pretty hot powder with fast burn rate...

Start low at 36.8gr,,, keep a eye on the cases when you close in on the 39gr...

40 ish to 41.2gr is max in my 65...

Thick Lapua 30/06 brass necked down to 6.5/06... 1:8 twist 25" non lapped barrel...
Fairly tight bore on this rifle...

Ive tested the H4831 and IMR4350,,, those powders will work too...

H1000 is my go to powder 52 to 53 max,,, 2980 ft-per seconds... The accuracy loads are 50.2 to 50.5 gr of H1000 behind the 140 to 143gr bullets... 2710 ft-per seconds... The next lower nod just below the max loads,,, a lot less flash burn on the throat,,, and no streched cases from over-loads...

This was a copy-cat load from my 140gr 270 winchester loads I've worked up... I hope I can get a few more jugs of H1000 ,,, RL powders are challenging to get up here in our area...
