300 wsm

why do bullets in a box that says 300WSM be .308? I assumed 300 is 300.

Ok,
A 30 caliber bullet is a .308 bullet diameter. Weather it's 30-30, 308, 30-06, 300WSM, 300Win, 300Wby, 300RUM, or 30-378Wby, it's still a 30 cal (.308 diameter)bullet. The CARTRIGE changes tho. It's an entirely different component.
30-30 Win pushes a 30 cal (.308 diameter) bullet with a smaller cartrige than say a 300Win which pushes a 30 cal (.308 diameter) bullet with the larger case capacity 300 Win cartridge.
A .308 Win cartridge pushes a 30 cal (.308 diameter) bullet from a .308 Win cartridge.
A 300WSM pushes the same 30 cal bullet as a 308 Win but with ALOT more authority due to the case capacity advantage, shoulder angle, & a few other factors of the 300WSM vs the 308Win cartridges.
The CARTRIDGES are NOT interchangeable in firearms! You can blow up a rifle using the wrong cartridge. Use ONLY the proper cartridges.
The Bullets themselves, however, are the same.
