300 WSM Any comments?

Big Sky,

heres my thinking, if your barrel is too hot to touch and accuracy becomes irratic whats the purpose of excessive shooting. My new rifle is designed for hunting its very lightweight and there is no need I feel to go shoot twenty rounds in a hour. I have tested a few relaoded recipes and have had success within my testing. Why change a good thing?

Another thing, I am fortunate enough to belong to a range that i can go to for a few hours after work anytime I wish, so again no need to shoot a multitude of rounds at each shooting. Another point, shooting three shots and checking a target at 500 yards takes more than enough time and darkness sometimes causes a conflict. I guess if I was a 1000 yard target shooter my equipment and practice routines would change.

Big Sky, hows the weather up there? Any ducks?

Well from your situation that makes sense to me. Yup there's always a few ducks and geese around. I'm not much of a duck hunter so I couldn't tell you if there numbers are up or down. Only that I see just as many in the regular places as usual. Some friends tell me that the goose hunting has been great so far. Got side tracked by some numbers in your original post and forgot to congratulate you on getting that buck. You don't have any photos you would post do you?

Mab,
You can buy all types of metal from
Varmet Al. His web site is

Look under his page index.

Luke,
Just noticably less than the 300WM.

Steel plate can be purchased at a local steel yard for cheap or free, just ask if they have any remnants and tell them what your using them for and you'd be surprized, they would probably just give you what you need, some will even cut it in the shear for you if you want killzone size pieces too. They get rid of some huge pieces from projects they just can't use up. Ask for some T1-steel remnants if they have them, they probably won't cut them in the shear for you because they are harder than mild steel, but you can shoot them closer without punching holes through them as easily. I've found them to be about twice as good. A 308 win at 2600 fps with 165 SGK's at 100 yards will not punch a hole in them, a 300 WSM will. Figure the impact velocity of the 308 at 100 yards and use this as a maximum impact velocity for others at greater distances, that is what I do.

does winchester factory ammo really have superior ballistics????? i used the realguns.com ballistics progam for these calculations. note at 1000yds, there is a drop of 250" vs. 22" for winchester ammo (according to an earlier post).

i just looked at the earlier post. he is saying "Distance Drop MOA". what ever that means, it must not be the same as "path - in".

so, what does "Distance Drop MOA" mean????
