Just traded for a 5r Remmy 300 win mag. Does anyone know of any magic loads for the 300 win and 178-180 grain pills. I shoot the 178 amaxes in my 308 and would like to just use these if possible. I understand I will have to work my own load, but there are several loads that work well in most guns like FGMM in the 308's. I would like to stick with a temp stable powder like H-1000 or H4350.

Give that 300 WM some guts. Don't sell yourself short with anything less than a 200 grainer in that rifle. The 300 WM is stout with a 180, but it is capable of much more.

Try a combination of H1000 with a 210 Berger or a 208 A max. Work up from around 74.5 - 77.0 grains with the bullet touching the lands.

If you really want a hammer, put a 230 grain Berger Hybrid on top of a case full of Retumbo. You'd be hard pressed to surpass this kind of long range capability with any other 300 WM load.

I just did a seating depth test at 220 yards with the 230/Retumbo combination with a factory built Remington 5R. It ended up stacking 4 shots into a .6 group with the cold bore shot slightly off the group to make it 1" overall. This was with the bullet seated .010 into the lands on top of 77.5 grains of Retumbo in a Remington case primed with a Fed 215. Velocity was 2830 fps. The only mods I've done to the rifle are Devcon bedding and I installed a Rifle Basix trigger.

My Savage 112BVSS in .300WinMag like 72.5gn of IMR4831 and CCI 250's. This load runs .2-.4's and averages around 3168fps.
I took it up to 73.0gns during load development and it averaged .5" @ 3238fps. No pressure signs but I opted for the more accurate of the two loads.

What bullet are you using?

Imo Imr4350, H4831sc, or Imr7828 are the top choices for 190 and lighter bullets, anything up to 215 H1000 gets my vote. For the 178s my first pick is Imr4350 with Fed210M primers in Federal brass.

Thanks fellas. I really want to use h1000 because I use it win my 7mag. I wouldn't mind using the 208's but they are impossible to find and I have a ton of the 178's. What is the recoil difference with the 208's. Seems everybody finds a good load around 76 grains of h1000 with those.

I've been up to 76grns, but that's way past book data, and should be approached with extreme caution, and that was also in Norma brass, which has the highest capacity of any 300wm brass. I'd start at 68grns with 178s, especially with saami freebore.
