I've started the planning phase of a new rifle build and am leaning toward the 300 Norma Magnum cartridge. Soo.....I have a few questions with which I would appreciate some help and clarification:
1) I understand that this cartridge requires a larger bolt face/action (same as the 338 Lapua Magnum) requiring a larger action than a standard long action. When I look at the dimensions of 300 NM case it's actually shorter than 300 Win Mag, which measures 2.62" whereas the 300 NM measures 2.492". The 300 NM case is fatter, so does that mean the action required is heavier or bulkier, rather than longer, than a standard long action? I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I'm just trying to get some clarity.
2) Assuming the action required is heavier/bulkier than a standard long action, but not necessarily longer, will I still be able to use a standard 3.85" long action bottom metal and magazines? Or does the 300 NM cartridge require a thicker, wider bottom metal and magazine?
3) In my research of the 300 Norma Mag cartridge I've gotten the impression that it is inherently very accurate and easily tunable. With that said I'm really not interested in shooting heavy bullets, but rather shooting Berger 215's in the hope of pushing them in the neighborhood of 3200 fps...assuming a 28"-30" barrel. Am I getting off track? Can I expect the same accuracy with 215's as others are getting with 230's?
Thanks in advance for any help.
