280 ai speed

I'm shooting a hart 24" barrel screwed into a rem700 by Dennis Vantassel and I'm getting great results with 168 bergers and slow stable powders like H1000 and Retumbo. I'm crunching in 63.2 grains into nosler brass but have no obvious pressure signs(sticky bolt/flats primers etc). Best accuracy w/WLR primers. Right at 3k and poking 3's and 4's when I am up to it. Gotta use the powders that fillerup if your going to take advantage of the AI's I think. My opinion but guns r like "my woman" ....picky.

None of Hodgdens Extreme powders will run the Ackley to its full potential....none have the right burn characteristics.

I run h1000 in my Ackley improved. And get 3050 with a 168 accubond or berger. Drops are verified to 1275 yards. This is a hot load and don't get very good brass life so I'm going to tone it down a couple grains. Really no need for that kind of speed.

If you're shooting heavies, try 7828 SSC, Fed 210M primers, and Berger 168 VLD's in Nosler .280 AI brass.

You will need to work up the load of course to find what works best in your gun.

Or...

You could use a different powder...and get it done with less pressure.

Reloder 22, Reloder 25, Reloder 33, N570, N560, IMR 7828ssc, MRP....to name a few.

Alright, I am now intrigued. I've been using H4831SC in my Cooper behind 168 Bergers with great accuracy and velocity in the low 2800's.

I have both 7828 and Retumbo in the cabinet. I'll pick at least one and do a max-load work up on the Magnetospeed in the next week or so, and post my results vs the H4831SC.

I'm interested to see where it shakes out - the experience here seems to be very positive with the slower powders.....

Another example of why this site is fun (and makes me want to burn powder)

I use 7828 SSC in both my .25-06 AI, and .30-06 AI. I get awesome velocities with the heavies, and a ****-near 100% burn rate with 26" barrels.

And when I build my 26" .280 AI...That will be my powder of choice for it, as well.

Looking forward to seeing your results.

Just outta curiosity...I have never run a flat base bullet in my 280AI... So last evening I seated some 160 grain Speer grand slams to the cannelure in front of 57.5 7828ssc/fed210m/win nickel fire formed brass for one group. ~2850 sd 18 for .45"@100. I think I'll try a few more:)

Looking forward to seeing your results.

I got 'em loaded this morning, using 168 Berger VLD-H . Both IMR 7828 and Retumbo. The Retumbo is a tight fit at book MAX when using mag-length OAL. I had to use some finesse filling to keep it from being a compressed load.

Now I just have to find time to shoot them!

I'll post when I do.

Brandon

I finally had a chance to shoot them today. Nice day for it, partly cloudy and 75F. All data is from a Magnetospeed V2. I was shooting from a bench at 150yds.

Retumbo - no pressure signs at max load, but no physical case room to go higher anyway. Velocity was about 50-60fps faster than H4831 max in my rifle. My three highest charge weights shot into slightly verticle, touching line. I am going to load some more at 62.5 and see what type of accuracy I get. There was a major jump in velocity in the middle of the work up (61.0 to 61.5), and it was a clear separator between POI (below that level groups were together and low, above it they were together and about 3/4" higher). I won't read too much into one set of data points but the obvious split in readings AND POI at that point was interesting.

IMR 7828 - no pressure signs at book max, and I have room in the case to go higher if I was so inclined. I probably won't, as velocities were higher than H4831SC but not so much that I would make the switch. The lower charge weights also seemed to be printing tighter groups than the higher weights.

I am still only smart enough to upload one pic at a time from my phone. Here is the Retumbo data.

I switched from H 4831sc to IMR 4831 and my accuracy got way better was more consistent as well I gained 250 ft/sec I crank 160 AB at 3000 ft/sec really nice and 140 AB at 3250 I'm very happy with that out of my 2 rifles.

How many grains of IMR 4831 were you using? tks
