.264 Win Mag vs. 7mm Mag

Accuracy loads in my 6.5 STW 28" barrel with the 130 scirroco. 80 Grains 7828=3530 fps, 78.5 grains WMR=3540 fps, 89 grains H5010=3510 fps.
With the 140 grain 87 grains H5010=3400 fps, 76.5 grains WMR=3420 fps, 90 grains H-870=3440 fps.

I assure you the 264 winchester is not vastly superior to the 7mm remington. I said splitting hairs because they are the excat same cartridge necked to different calibers. The only difference is the available bullets give the 264 a slight advantage if a guy wants to split hairs. I will get the jbm up on my actual loads when I have time. I agree his question was answered long ago but then he said he may start loading bullets and then this all started. I think with what he already has the 264 is a better choice.

Cornstalker, I will also try and get up the ballistics on my 264 STW. That is the one you want. It is amazing. We have more fun with that rifle than about anything on long range deer and antelope. 140 grainers over 3400 fps and the 130 swift at 3550 fps.

Is there another thread discussing the 264 STW? Haven't heard much about this one, is it a 264 Win Mag case that is modified?

The 6.5 or 264 STW is the 8mm remington magnum necked to 6.5 or .264 caliber. The 8mm remington case came out in 1977 I think. It is a full length 375 H&H magnum blown out and improved. It quickly gained great popularity as the best case out there for wildcatters looking for the utmost in performance and everybody in the country wildcatted it for years. In the late 90's or so a gun writer named Layne Simpson named the 7mm version of the cartridge Shooting Times Westerner after his magazine Shooting Times. This was shortenned to STW and now most wildcats off the case go by that name out of simplicity and standardization. Basically the STW name now goes to cartridges made by necking the 8mm rem mag. The 30 caliber in particular has several names.

Just like the 7mm STW and 7mm-300 wby. They are virtually the same thing with different shoulders. People went to the 8mm rem mag case because of the cost of the wby brass. Now that is not an issue since several companies offer wby brass at the same cost of any other.

The 130 Scirroco at 3500+ is most impressive, but I will stick with my 264 for now. however, I keep thinking about aa 6.5-375Ruger. I would think 3550-3600 with the Scirroco, fun stuff.

longtime long long ranger have you tired the 139 gr lapua scentar in the 6.5 stw and if so what velocities and what do you think of that bullet? Anyone else who has any expirence with this bullet feel free to chime in, thanks

I will keep my pre-64 Model 70, .264 Win Mag with the original 26" tube. I use a 120 grain Barnes TSX handloaded into Winchester cases, my load produces 3480 fps. At 300 yards it prints 1.5" three shot groups. I have used it since 1996 and am very pleased. I have used 7MM Rem Mags, it is a very good round also with good bullets available. I just like the .264.

Just my two cents. MEV

I'm considering one of these two and was hoping for some opinions on them.

It would be mostly for long range hunting for deer, antelope. I already have a .300 Win Mag that works good on elk.

However I don't reload...at least not yet.

Also, I've been eyeing the Remmington's Sendero and Savage's Long Range Hunter. Any opionions of those would be welcome too.

Thanx in advance!!!

I do get many laughs out of this. Why you might ask? I shoot a 7mm-08 140 accubond or partition and have taken 85% of all North American game with it. No need for a cannon, magnum. Just be effective

WOW! A Zombie thread has come back to life! 😂 I ended up with a .257 Weatherby Mark V Accumark in .257 Wby Mag. I couldn't be happier. It's waaay more accurate than I am.

My friend's daughter shoots a 7mm-08 and it seems to be a very efficient cartridge.
