recently acquired a beautifull early 50's mauser target rifle in 250 gibbs. I question where to leave alone or rechamber to something newr and perhaps easier to feed. any insight appreciated. thanks in advance for your input!

240 gibbs. my bad. small keyboard and weakening eyes.

In seriousness feenix has some experience with the Gibbs and can probably help you. The 240 looks like it would be fun!

The Gibbs cartridges aren't difficult to load for - they just take a bit more time than a typical Ackley improved cartridge. Typically, you'll need to establish a false shoulder to headspace off as you are moving the shoulder forward quite a bit. Necking down 270 Win or 280 Rem brass would probably work best. 25-06 work work also, but you may want to expand the necks to at least .264 before necking down to ensure a more robust false shoulder.

I have a 6.5 Sherman (very similar to 6.5 Gibbs) and use 270 Win brass. False shoulder method works great.

For illustrative purposes, 270 Win necked down to .264 leaving false shoulder. Fireformed 6.5 Sherman round.

am
l am familiar with the process, not hard, just time consuming and component wasteing. was hoping for an easy out. this may be my best choice however. short of rebarreling. thanks

just bought 100 rounds from Graf. thanks
Excellent! I did the same thing for my .30 Gibbs, but I started with .35 Whelen, -06, .270 Win, and .280 Rem brass before purchasing the Qual Cart brass. I do not have .24 cal at the moment and might do the Gibbs. Good luck and have fun with it.

Tooth,
I'm not sure where I saw it, but gun writer Wayne Van Zoll wrote an article some years ago with some load data for the 240 Gibbs. I'll see if I can find it if you're interested.
