i am trying to find a load for my 22-250Ai i am pushing a 75 grain amax. i have tries varget and that doesnt work. i have also ran up to 42 grains of 4831sc and i was only able to get3250 and accuracy wasnt great. i am trying to use a powder that is not temp sensative. i shoot from below zero to 90deg.

what is a good powder for this combo?
how far off the lands if any with the amax?

thanks you in advance for any help....

As far as velocity is concerned, H4895 (Hodgdon Extreme Powder) Should yield the fastest velocities. I use it in my father's custom .22-250 Rem.

As far as accuracy for the 75g V-max, What is the twist for your bbl?? That may be the cause of the in-accuracy of the loads.

My Father's custom .22-250 is at it's best with a 55g V-Max with H4895. Quite a Rockchuck or Coyote killer.

i actually have 80gr berger vlds also.as for the seirras i was worried that the they wouldnt open on a coyote or fox. i am trying to find a load for the amax because i have 600 of them. this rifle is my varmate gun.

tjonh2001,
I had a hard time getting my .22-250 (1-14" twist) to shoot the 52gn A-Max's. I was perplexed because this rifle shot the 52gn Sierra MK into .2's. I tried every powder I had that I thought was within the speed range needed for the rifle/bullet combo. I know I tried IMR3031/4320/4895, Varget/H414/H4895/BL-C(2) and Alliant's 10X & RL15. The best I got was about 1/2" for 3 shots at 100yds. I actually shot a couple of boxes of those A-Max's trying to find a decent shooter.
Then I ran across some VihtaVuori N133. (I bought that because I had a .223 at the time with a 1-9" twist) I tried the last few A-Max's with this powder and CCI BR2's in my .22-250. The first group (31.5gn) ran .2795". Subsequent groups were 32.0gn = .8705", 32.5gn = .6100" and 33.0gn = .7670". Velocities were 3692, 3733, 3807 and 3831fps. Too bad I was out of them as I vowed myself I wouldn't spend anymore of my money on those darn Hornady bullets - in any caliber!
I've since gotten rid of the .22-250 and .223, but I still have the N133. Good luck with those A-Max's! JohnnyK.

i have not had time to start working up loads for my 250ai yet but the load that has been repeatedly recommended to me was 39+grns of rl15 with the 75 a-max

I've heard the same thing about RL15 and that is where I intend on starting.

Not to change the subject but what it the ideal COAL with the 75's and still be able to run light bullets in the AI.

Hornady will tell you that the maxl oad for a std 22-250 and the 75 amax is 33.3 gr of rl15. They say it should push it 3200. I just talked to they today.

In my 22-250 AI with a 27" barrel I use 41gr RL19 and it yields 3500fps. This load is hot but I can group 2-2.5 inches at 500yds. I have them in the lands.
