.308 / 7.62mm 1:15 up to 150 grains
1:14 150 – 168 grains
1:12 168 – 170 grains
1:10 170 – 220 grains
1:8 220 grains or more

According to this, I can stabilize 168-170 grain bullets with a 1:12 ratio. Is anything smaller than this too fast of a twist ratio.

I wanted to load 150g Matchkings and Gamekings at 150 grains, but this chart made me question if my twist ratio is too fast.

My suggestion would be to buy a couple of boxes (different makers and bullets) of OTC ammo in that weight range and see how it shoots for you.

If you can get anything like acceptable results with them, then you should be able to work up a good load in that range.

What should work with a given twist is more or less a guideline. I'm shooting a fast twist (1:8) 24" .260 and getting very good results with 120gr bullets even though with that twist rate the 130-140's should be the ideal.

A 1:12 is more than ample for the 150gn .308 bullet. I currently have 2 set ups that will shoot 150's easily. The first is a custom barrel in 1:12 that shoots 175's w/ great results. It has a stability factor of 1.59. If I bump the speed up a little the stability factor goes up. You can't shoot a .308 fast enough to tear apart a bullet. The other rifle is a 1:10 twist shooting 150's. The higher the spin the better the bullet will perform in stability, but also upon contacting game. It will work just fine. I wouldn't concern yourself with stability or too much twist in a .308 and 150 grain bullets. Just my .02 150's will shoot, just a matter of finding a good load. One thing I forgot to mention, the 1:10 that I have has produced .1-.2" groups using 110-135grn bullets. I haven't tried anything lighter in the 1:12 yet, because I wanted to shoot 175's specifically. I know that lighter bullets would work just fine.

You can't over stabilize a bullet. With a 12 twist 308 you can shoot everything from the light 110 grain varmint bullets up through the 180 grain bone crushers.

Since you mentioned the 150 grain game/match king. push 'em between 2850 and 2900 and The biggest mule deer walking won't get up from a well placed shot. load a 165 grain bullet and the Elk better low crawl inside 300 yards.
