    Portable shooting bench recommendations

Years ago I had a gunsmith who was big into dogging(RIP). One thing that he preached was being mobile, much more than a heavy bench near the truck. He made his own, folding, wooden, still a little weight to it. My ‘system’ is this ‘Strutter’ type chair, then shooting sticks. It’s even more...

    PD shoot coming up

I will say, early to mid June is my favorite time. The pups aren’t all born on the same date anyway, size & age vary. Years ago I took two 17 HMR’s out dogging. We used them some but only brought them one year. Since I reload, mostly just use the 223 & 22-250s. Hopefully you have cooperative...

    COL to mag length

There was an interesting test in Handloader magazine years ago. What the author did was purposely deform & damage the tips of bullets, to a good degree. The basic gist was, at ‘normal’ hunting ranges, there was near zero difference with accuracy. Of course we don’t want damaged tips, also...

    Deer mineral

Porcupines love salty products too, likely more than deer. It depends on how far from camp they are whether I shoot them or not. I figure most everyone shoots them, so I’ll often leave them be. Most ‘mineral bags’ are 97%+ salt, but cost more than salt.

    SOLD/EXPIRED S&W 586 or 686

Just thinking out loud. I have as mint of one as a guy can own, box & all, early 90’s. 686.

    Roundup, MT Prairie Dogging?

Thanks Rum Man. I don’t mind a little rum at times myself.😜

    SOLD/EXPIRED RECOB's Wisconsin N560 and N570

One of my favorite shops for reloading supplies.

    Illinois deer rifle

At first when I saw this pass I was excited about using my 45-70 or 444 Marlin. Yes I could render either a single-shot. I still would have to do some modifications, more extensive testing. After thinking some, I’ll just stick to my Knight Elite ML. For a host of reasons, I think it’s a better...

    Prairie dog hunts

Yep, I’ve had places that were red hot, then dead a few years later due to plague. There’s no other reason, you’ll not wipe them out by shooting. This was also an area where poisoning wouldn’t be a thing. Yes, On-x Hunt & satellite images help one scout from home. Another thing I’ve done is...

Does anyone hunt with 22-250 anymore?

Go dogging in June & you shouldn’t have to do the 500 yard shots, unless you want to.

    Dogs Meet Wolf Pack

Filmed in Italy, likely not packing a 6.5x284. They looked a little doggy/wolf/coyote cross, wagging tails & such. I agree, when called for, man’s best friend needs a little protection.

Does anyone hunt with 22-250 anymore?

I normally load 50 grain bullets in my custom 1/14” 22-250. I have a cheap Savage Axis I bought new for $194 also. Right now Speer & Midway factory 2nds are on the bench, haven’t decided yet. I have a bunch of suitable powders, a few versions of 4064, Varget, Hunter, then always plenty of...

    Speer varmint bullet

Yeah, I’m a sucker for factory seconds & whatever is on sale, frangible of course. Just a few years ago I bought a fair amount under $10 a 100. If someone asks, Blitzkings are about my favorite, but at 1/2 the price, the cheapies get-R-done.

    Roundup, MT Prairie Dogging?

I plan to visit a buddy in Helena, MT in June, mostly fishing. A secondary plan is a little dogging, I don’t mind paying some for access. I’m not really looking for high end lodging, meals & the open bar. Right now looking within 3 hours or so from Helena, Roundup could even be further, no...

Does anyone hunt with 22-250 anymore?

I just started some 22-250 loading today, prairie dogging rounds. I’m in the middle of case prepping. It will be 50 grain frangible bullets, haven’t settled on a powder yet. I usually load mine above 223 levels, but a fair bit below max, much easier on the brass & next resizing.
