  • This cartridge amazes me with its performance. It is only a tiny bit less power than the 338 Win mag with less recoil. I hope your rifle performs well and good luck on your future hunts.

(sorry for the broken up story)

I knew it was a bit too much gun for a small coues wt but it shoots so well! I will be taking it to NM for my cow elk hunt. I will also take my lightweight 338 RCM sporter so I will have close and far covered.
The exit hole was 3/8" diameter or so but the amazing thing was the exit devastation! It removed the skin in a 6" diameter and disrupted the meat in that area, taking out some of the rear of the offside shoulder. Impact velocity was 2100 fps energy 2940 ft/lb.
The buck reversed direction and when he turned around Todd could see the blood spraying out of the exit hole! It dropped right away. The bullet's path managed to barely nick the front of the stomach and go just above the heart.
With Todd's directions we found the buck at 503 yds. I setup for the shot with the 300 gr Berger. It was facing left quartering slightly with head further away and butt closer. I hit it behind the shoulder and the bullet went through at an angle. I lost sight in the thick prickly pears and mesquites on the slope but both friends saw the show.
At first light my friend got a medium sized 3 x 3 buck at 400 yds with his 257 weatherby. Our spotter was still high on a hill with his big eyes. (twin swarovski 20 x 60 by 80 spotters in a special yoke). Alex and I were at his deer and Todd says say....I have another buck, a spike. Would that work for you, Ross? I figured wow two bucks in the same opening day morning, why not?
    Hi!
I thought you would like to hear what happened when I took out the heavy 338 RCM for my coues wt hunt that started yesterday, Nov 11.
