Why the 338-378 Weatherby is my favorite long range Rifle

true that. But if I was hunting Buffalo it would be from around 100 meters or so. No need for the tipped projectile, I would choose one of the heavier TSX bullets, either the 300 gr. or 350 grain. Having said that, If I was hunting a thin skinned animal with the 270 LRX in Africa and a nice...

Why the 338-378 Weatherby is my favorite long range Rifle

Just out of curiosity, why did you choose a 375 AI over a 375 Weatherby?

Why the 338-378 Weatherby is my favorite long range Rifle

I was careful to clean after every range session, usually 10-12 shots. I may have burnt out my barrel using it in a fly shoot - 35 rounds or so in about an hour. Was running 225 Barnes through it.

Why the 338-378 Weatherby is my favorite long range Rifle

What's not to like? The recoil. I run mine with a JP Recoil Eliminator. Shoots like a 308. But noisy as. When I started working ujp loads there were no LRX, or even TTSX, I was using the plain old TSX. Recently loaded some of the TTSX, shot the same as the TSX. Not sure I would use the TTSX...

Are pillars necessary, or advised, for a carbon fiber stock?

Thanks, I have been thinking along those same lines. Although carbon fibre is not particularly dense, it is uniform, stiff, and relatively incompressible, which is what is required when torquing an action to a stock. In fact, I have been considering using heavy wall carbon fibre tubing for...

Why the 338-378 Weatherby is my favorite long range Rifle

I liked my 338-378, up until i got around 400 shots down the barrel. Then the groups opened up to 2+inches. Bore scoped it and saw the Pac-nor stainless barrel was severely eroded and unsalvagable. It was great until then. Secondly, Weatherby did chamber the Accumark in 338 Lapua a few years...

Are pillars necessary, or advised, for a carbon fiber stock?

I have purchased a Bergara Crest with carbon fiber stock. No pillars in stock. I'm thinking they may be unnecessary, as the carbon fiber where the receiver screws pass is solid and likely as incompressible as steel or aluminium. I plan to bed the recoil lug and immediate area, but I'm...

Red Stag in south Australia at 484 yards

The nightforce is a nice scope, I have the same on a rifle in the US - 3.5x15x56. I bought the Swaro cause it had the ballistic turret and zero stop, and was about $500 less than the equivalent Nightforce. For the record, I had to send my Nightforce back when it lost zero - factory said they...

Red Stag in south Australia at 484 yards

Scope is back with Swarovski. Waiting to see what they say. meanwhile using Sightron 10-50x60 illuminated Slll at range. Love the Sightron. I also have a 3x15x40 Sll ($200 a few years back), an 8-32x50 Slll. IMO nothing else comes close to Sightron for value, very little comes close to...

Red Stag in south Australia at 484 yards

I just took a red stag at 484 yards in Water Valley, South Australia. Using a 300 Weatherby Mag, Obermeyer 27" barrel with 13 twist, 168 grain Tipped Triple Shocks, Swarovski Z5 5-25. The Swarovski was a big disappointment. the turret adjustments seemed random, i.e. clicks did not correspond...

    378 Weatherby fan new guy

re Pac Nor barrel: I'm a big fan of Krieger barrels, mainly because the barrel on my 378 is accurate, doesn't foul (I shoot Barnes almost exclusively) and has lasted for around 1000 rounds with no apparen loss of accuracy. Shoots 168, 180, and 200 grain Barnes TSX with equal precision. Having...

    378 Weatherby fan new guy

I consider the 378 Weatherby an outstanding long range round, particularly when shooting 270 grain projectiles. In fact, it is my favorite LR caliber. I own a 378 WBY short throat with Kreiger barrel, JP recoil eliminator (though if I had to do it over I would go with a Holland QD brake - a bit...
