308 168grain AMAX for deer 100-400 yards Comments please

It's been my experience that they work really well. There is a tendency to knock a big exit hole but worth it for extreme accuracy. Where you hit them is the most important part of the equation regardless what you're using.

    Zeiss or Leupold...need opinions

Both are great companies with exceptional products. My varmint scopes are both Nikon Monarchs but I have several Leupold variables along with a fixed 4x that are great scopes, tough as nails. My one and only Zeiss Conquest gets to go deer hunting more than any others though, the early and late...

neck sizing or fll length sizing

I like the Lee collet dies also, you can build a pretty accurate cartridge on a shoestring if you think things through and don't try to get too many uses out of your brass. I'm a hunter not a match shooter so my criteria will differ in some respects. With out all the right equipment and...

    want to start reloading

I just got started and am doing it on a shoestring. Rather than get a kit I read and read and read some more. Tried to use product reviews and shopped around for value items with the exception of an expensive press for now, and frankly the used Lee O press I'm using is working just fine. There...

    reliable scope on a budget

You mentioned side focus, I only have side adjustment on one of my varmint rifles (.204 Ruger) everything else I hunt with purposely is variable but fixed focus. I practice getting my eye lined up with the center as best I can and it's just one less thing to mess with. The most power on any of...

    Conquest reticle choice

Yes here it is: Welcome to Carl Zeiss Optical, Inc. mine is a 3X9X40 MC. I agree about keeping it simple when deer hunting. What is quicker though, dialing up an elevation knob or using a hold over hash mark that you have practiced with. There is more than one way to skin the proverbial cat (or...

    Conquest reticle choice

I have the Rapid-Z600 in a 3X9 that I like. Zero your rifle at 200 yards adjust the power per the calculator on their web-site for your caliber, bullet weight, temp., elevation above sea level, etc. My rifle was right on using this scope and program. The reticle is etched and augments the...

    I'm Done With Remington

Things sure can change and how. I was out just today shooting a 700 in 6mm Rem that was built in 64 (if I have my letter K correctly) and what was amazing to me was that it will hang with some rifles that are supposed to be worth a whole lot more. It's just an old ADL that wouldn't bring much if...

You're favorite "woods gun"? mine proved true today

Just got done putting a smallish (19" barreled) model 700 in 6mm back into service. It has open sights that I managed to strip a screw and break another on trying to adjust (I'm like a bull in a china shop some days) and the old scope wasn't hitting on much so I took the iron sight off and...

to take or not to take a head shot on a deer?

No two opportunities are exactly the same. I've had many DRT neck shots but only recall one head shot (back of the head where the neck meets) these shots have been taken with equipment, position, and practical experience that allowed for an ethical kill. I hunt some places that you just can't...

most accurate out of the box factory rifle?

I've been blessed with some great shooting rifles. I have a Cooper that was at the top of the heap but I bought a T/C Icon in .308 last year that is pretty phenomenal, it's capable of making holes touch at 200 yards when I do my part don't know if it is the 5R rifling or not but my guess is it...
