    Lightweight Rifle Build

The 7-08 will get 2675 -2700 fps with a Berger 168 Hunting bullet in a 22 inch barrel, REM 700 with a muzzle brake if you use RL-17. Weight is easily controlled with a good stock. You should be able hit 2850-2875 easily with a 150 grain flat base bullet. The rifle my son uses is a 700 with a...

    250 Savage quickload

The Speer 87 Grain Grain Hotcor is great bullet for medium game including deer. It wont come apart on whitetail size game and has a good track record. Try IMR 3031 and Win 748 are easy to load with 87 grain projectiles. Both H4895 and IMR 4895 are also excellent. I have read where the 100 gr...

26” 270 rifle for mule deer

I agree with Marksman1941, Put a scope on the 30-06 say 4-12 power with a 40 or 50mm with a good ranging reticle. Use a 165 -175 grain bullet and you will good for anything you encounter. I have taken antelope and mule deer with a 308, 270, 30-06, in Montana and your 30-06 will shoot flat and...

300 blackout is too weak for deer (graphic)

Try the the Sierra 125 grain Pro Hunter. It will work fine and is not as explosive as the TNT. The Nosler 125 grain Ballistic Tip or Accubond should work too. I have used the the Sierra 125 gr Pro Hunter in a 308 and had very good luck with it on deer.

    308 Bullet Selection

My four sons and I have hunted in the East and out West with a 243, 7mm-08 , 270, 308 and 30-06. I used a 30-06 in the PA woods and Mississippi bottom land with Hawk 165 grain Round Tips with .030 jacket and those bullets will anchor Whitetail deer, complete penetration, and large wound...

    Which barrel?

A few months ago I checked with Rock Creek Barrels for a 338 barrel and they were tied up in DOD contracts and not making any sporter barrels. Check with Kim if you call. I wound up choosing a Bartlein for 338/06 AI built on an Sako L61R Long Action. I am very happy with the Bartlein.

    Which barrel?

I put together an 8 X 57 with Rock Creek number 3 contour. I believe its a 1 in 9 twist with a 24 inch length. It was built on a 98 Mauser . The Rock Creek barrel is very accurate and it provides some very high velocities, at least when compared to what Quickload estimates. The gun shoots the...

Here We Go Again! I need to build a Mule Deer Rifle

I have a 308 and 270 and like them both. The 270 shines with the older 150 grain Nosler solid base. If I were to build one today it would be a 280 Ackley Improved. We have one in the family built on an Encore . It does very well with H4831 and a 150 gr Scirocco. It is getting 3059 fps +- 18 and...

    Keeping your barrel cool…

I am in Florida, not 113 but it is hot in summer. I am in the shade at the range. Last time there it was over 95 degrees. I used a reusable ice pack wrapped in towel over the chamber and took the bolt out for about 5-10 minutes. This was after 15-20 rounds .308 rounds that had fired with a...

    .224 cartridge dilemma/discussion

I had an older Ruger 77 Tang safety in 220 Swift. I rebarreled it to 220 Weatherby Rocket with a 1/8 twist and I love it. It shoots all weights from 55 grains to 80 grain Bergers VLD's very well. The brass does not require constant trimming as it did in the past. It really likes the 75, 80...

    8x57 JS loads

You may want also to try the Hornady 170 SST with CF223. I will have to look it up the exact charge , but it is accurate and I get 2800 fps with a 24 inch barrel on a Mauser 98. I have used the Sierra and Hornady om Whtetails and Muley's with good success.

    8x57 JS loads

The 175 Sierra Pro Hunter works well with 47 grains IMR 4064. That is the accuracy load from Pet Loads, The maximum is approx 49 grains depending on the gun.
