I did not have time to read all of this but, If not said, I have 2 simple ways to prove concept:
1.Shoot through multiple sheets of very thin paper spaced out.
2. Shoot multiple short and long range groups with a thick rail gun or many varied loads (to eliminate harmonic grouping). The...
I will just add that I do think the 300 barrel will last longer, but for a few hunting shots every year , I will never wear it out.
Looking back I wish I had bought a 338 LM for LR. There are so many good reasons to buy one and the fact that it can reach out another 2-300Y past the rums with...
180 Berger 284 @3100 2000Y/3000ft Drop 70.4moa wind 11.7 504.5 Energy
210 Berger 308 @2900 2000Y/3000ft Drop 86.1moa wind 13.6 496.3 Energy
3000 Rum has edge under 1100Y on energy. Shooting a moose at 200Y...take the 300 but,....
7mm Rum has edge on windage/drop all the way through due to...
+1 for 160 Accubonds , Shot faster than expected with good accuracy.
+1 for 180 Bergers, Shot slower but, felt they bucked wind better.
For hunting and 800-1200Y go with the Accubonds=...if going more get more BC/slower bullet.
With the 160's it still feels like a hot rod at 3200-3400fps...
Agreed, This is why I don't push the velocity or heat mine up. Hits just fine out past a mile. Only rifle I own that reaches out further is my 50, The rum very capable:) 200+ Rounds and counting.
The only regret is 12lbs 7 Rum Sendero vs my 9lbs 300 WM Sako I take hunting. A few pounds on a...
Dang this thread just keeps going. I pulled my Sendero 7 Rum out for a back up this year.. took two shots at the 200y Bull, 1/2 inch to right and 3/4 inch apart at 2960fps. Nice to know it was still on and consistent should I need it.

Looking at the harvest rates 23% for 2011 and 19% for the two years before. Guess I'm not too far off having seen one bull, and I bet the outfitters with horses really change those odds for us on two feet. Getting clear of other hunters is a tall order on public lands.
I still love the...
Just wanted to give OP something to consider when choosing a VDL.
Lots of pros and cons.
If fast kill and LR accuracy are your priorities the Berger VDL's are king.
Happy Hunting:)
After seeing the fragmentation of the super accurate Berger VDL's on targets, I would not use em on game I intend to eat because, of lead getting in the blood stream/meat. The lead powder is all over the targets. They do shoot better though.
This is just my 2 cents. Try a bonded bullet, like...
I've been hunting in the same Salmon Zone 28b for 7 out of 8 years. I see a few cows every year, saw one bull 4 years ago and buddy shot one that same year...not real high odds if you ask me.
I just got back from a 5 day and got the drop on some cows but, no bull. Like to blame the wolfs but...
