Hey guys,

I'm looking to build a long range rifle but I have a couple questions first, what is the best action to buy and what caliber I want to shoot varmints with it. And I want a good barrel to put on it so what brand of barrels do you guys like?

There are lots of good actions and barrels out there that will do what you want. I normally recommend the Remington 700 (Short Or Long depending on the cartridge you chose) because of ts ability to be very accurate and the availability of Stocks, Triggers, scope mounts and any other accessory you want.

They are simple, abundantly available, and respond well to accurizing. There are other good actions
available but the 700 is my first choice.

Good Barrels are another item that comes down to choice but like everyone I have my favorites base on
quality, performance, velocity, longevity, consistency, ETC.

My preference in order is Lilja, Kriger, Hart and so on. Other people may/will have there preference in
a different order/brand, but this is just my opinion.

There are many fine calibers to choose from, and I suggest you start with the game to be hunted, the max distance you will be shooting, if you reload and any other information you can give us. With this
information this site should be able to guide you through the selection process for your build.

If this is your first custom build feel free to ask questions.

Good luck

Im wanting something to shoot varmints like coyotes and up to 1000 yards.

What kind of budget are you looking at not including glass?

What you want to do can be done with a $700-$1200 factory rifle, or if you have deep pockets, a custom build between $3000 - $4500.

As far as caliber.. I'd say a 6mm or 6.5mm variant. I like the plain ol' .243 with heavies (105s) as it can do 1000yds better than most. Next I'd look into a 6.5mm. I like cartridges I can get Lapua brass for so I like the .260, and if you want a little more bump, go 6.5x284 (but buy 2-3 barrels from jump to save time/wait down the road as it will eat them up).

Rock Creek
Obermeyer
Douglas
Krieger
Hart
Shilen
Brux
Broughton
Bartlein
Muller

My smith always told me that it's not necessarily what barrel brand you use, it's how well the smith does his job on all the other little details that really makes it shoot.

And I believe that to be true. Because he's took factory rifles with factory bull barrels, trued everything up, and re-worked them, and made them 1K shooting machines for me. I've seen rifles (other people's) with custom barrels shoot horribly, and seen factory barrels shoot 1 hole. I believe it's mostly in how good the smith is.

For 1000 yard shots I would recommend a minimum of 6.5 or 7mm because of BCs.

I would look at the 280 AI. low recoil, long range capable with 140 ABs, 160 ABs and 162 Bergers

"Best" Action: BAT is likely best in the world. Many others are excellent: Borden, Surgeon, Pierce, Nesika, Stiller, Winchester 70, Remington 700

"Good" barrel: Most any from a Douglas on up. Great barrels include Krieger, Hart, Bartlein, Broughton, Brux, Lilja, Obermeyer, Shilen, Rock, Benchmark, Bison, Criterion, LW, Schneider.

I just finished a long range elk rifle. Remington 700, lilja barrel, reworked action, and HS precision stock. I already owned the action and put about 1,000 into the rebuild. Barrel is sporter weight and will put 160's in the same hole. Have not yet had good of luck with 180 Bergers but I have not done much load development with them. Caliber is 7 mm STW

from you have said so far- bat action , krieger barrel, mcmillain stock , jewell trigger and night force 12-42. 6.5-284

Cody - i have shot over 250 coyotes. i have shot in competition to 1000 yards. the coyote is a small challenging target. there is an article on page 22 of the american rifleman april 2007 "the professional" . you need to read it. nesika is another good action. roninflag

I had my latest long range varmint gun built in 7 Rem mag to take advantage of the high BC 180 gr Berger VLD bullets.
I wanted a "best" quality build as well so I went with a BAT action, Kreiger barrel, Jewell trigger, Greybull stock with bedding block milled out and glass bedded, and Schmidt Bender scope.
It's kinda heavy at 13.5 lbs, but it's worked out great with numerous kills on rock chucks between 900 and 1300+ yards.
