Thor Muzzleloader Bullets?

Barnesuser,

I have never heard of the company previously. I use a 300 gr. Barnes original in 45/70. This has worked well in my Savage 10ML.

The reason i wanted to know was because my dad wants to hunt mule deer and elk in colorado and you cant use saboted bullets there but i wanted to stick with Barnes so i sent Barnes an email and he directed me to Thor's website but i wanted to know if anyone has any experience with them in their muzzle loader.

been using them for 4 years now. The ultimate conical for Colorado shooters.

Just sighted in a CVA Wolf friday with the 250gr Thor .500" and 100gr blackhorn209.

Thank you very much for the link. I think willl give them a try when he gets a mule deer or Elk tag in Colorado. I was concerned that the skirt was too thick to expand against the rifling but based on that group I think they grab on nicely!

From my experience the Buckhorn powder is what you have to stick with. A lot of the smokeless powders seem to overpower them into bigger groups. The other thing that is important is to get the right diameter for you gun.

Right now we are using triple seven pellets with the Barnes tmz, which loose powder would you guys recommend?

depends on the gun. If it uses #11 or musket caps or is a bolt action with that slotted breech plug, Pyrodex RS is great stuff to use with the Thor. Modern inline with enclosed breech plug, Blackhorn209.

Note to CVA guys with in-lines, some of the breech plugs may require modification to reliably ignite BH209 consistently. CVA has caught on and does sell some new modified breech plugs capable of shooting BH209. However some breech plugs will require modification to the flash hole, drilling them out to .031" (thirtyone thousands). T/C requires no modifications to current in-lines.

Encore, interesting that I came across your post as I am in the process of setting up a new CVA Accura V2. So far, have tried only Powerbelt 250 AeroTips with White Hots. With only a few shot so far, I notice the need to clean after no more than two shots.

After reading about BH209 I was wanting to give this a try but see from your comments, the breech plug may need modification. I'll check with the folks at CVA regarding a modified BP.

Thanks,

BH209 is quite the propellent for those rifles that have the proper breech plug. I shot 30 rounds the other day and never swabbed the barrel, nor did it have any change in my P.O.I. A friend that shoots here has the Accura and although his barrel is just a little tight for the round he uses, he can shoot without swabbing with no change in P.O.I and continue to load. Another REALLY nice thing about it, is that it cleans up with just Hoppe's and you DO NOT use water clean up. There are other cleaners which will clean BH209 easily but some of them stink, which if you do it in the house, it might bring comments from the wife! I happen to use Montana X-Treme Blackhorn 209 Cleaner. It stinks but, its designed for BH209 and makes the barrel "squeeky clean". Read all the pages about BH209.... Blackhorn 209

Here's IMO a much better bullet, especially if you plan on longer range and IF.... you can use saboted bullets where you hunt Muzzleloader Spit-Fire TMZ

Ol'Gator, I would try your current CVA breech plug with the Blackhorn 209 as you might find it works just fine and not have to spend the money on another breech plug. My Optima with the stock breech plug has been setting it off every shot so far, but I use CCI 209 magnum primers which seem to be the ticket and keeping that flash hole clean with no obstructions. But i'd try what you have first and maybe save yourself some money just use a good hot primer.

Thanks both of you. I did call CVA this morning and like you said, they recommend a different breech plug for BH209. I will be going to the range in the morning to see how the original plug works. Since I'm short on time before my hunting trip, just in case, I ordered the other breech plug from CVA.

Also, thanks for the information on the different bullets.
