Best of the West 'Lope shot

If he was holding right behind the shoulder thats 3 MOA off on the wind call at 800 yards. Sorry but I think I can get closer on my wind call than that, they are even using high BC bullets! There's something wrong with that.

I was once on a show that was aired on TV, not going to say which one, but I shot a nice mule deer buck about 7 years ago. The shot was not the greatest and I needed to hit him 2 more times to bring him down. The 1st shot was at about 375 yards, not far by today's standards, but back then, LRH was not as specialized as it is now, at least for me. When we came up to the buck, he was hit all 3 times. The camera crew had me act like I had just seen the buck and had me bend down to one knee and fire a shot at a rock as they filmed. I was then told to stand up and say "got him". They then spliced the film together, showing the last shot that put the buck down for good. When I saw the show on TV, it really made me look like I took the buck with one clean shot, I didn't. However, I told everyone that congratulated me on the great shooting, that it took me 3 shots total. It surprised everyone. That said, I guess that's show biz.

I am clearly not saying that's what happended here, just what happened to me!

I have been following The Best of the West since John Burns, as well as the other long range hunting shows since their first airing, I really enjoy watching and using some of their products, knowing we owe all the credit to these guys for putting this LRH sport of ours in the spotlight, my hats off to them. However, like someone above posted, even the best shooter in sport can have a bad shot for unforeseen reasons. I would not judge them, just enjoy the show!

"I do think they do the long range hunting community a disservice with their "boom, simple as that" marketing. You occasionally do see crappy shots on that show with guest hunters because lets face it, putting a Huskema on your rig and using their wind reader at your location, isn't going to cut it. With all the intricacies people talk about with equipment and shooting and color of your socks...blah blah blah, we all know that accurate long range shooting is not as simple as they make it out to be. You have to shake your head when they say "John here has never been behind this setup, and made a 1 shot 900 yard kill. That is the simplicity of our BOTW system.".........+1

I gotta admit they turned me on to bergers......Thanks. They expanded the public face of this sport...........Thanks. They attempt to over simplify the issue with a constant bombardment of whatever their peddling........<>..............I cut them allot of slack for the inroads they have made but I think they should guard that progress greedily and be careful and clear that It takes more than there gadgets and two practice shots to do it ethically at any range. I have had the pleasure of enlightening many people to the fact it can be done but have also bean disheartened a couple times by folks convinced all they needed was the gadgets. "Practice is a waist of time, My scope says 925 right on it" or "my BDC had better be dead on at 700, It said so on the website".

So what if he shot it in the ***, he got it right? I don't care how good you are it's always a possibility even at 100 yds.

If they covered it up, I understand why. In a perfect world you'd be able to show it all, the good the bad and the ugly and make your arguments from there but everyone feels the need to put on the mask.

Hell, I aways though antelopes were for practice anyway, kinda like prairie dogs.:D

there really really needs to be bow down smiley.............................................

We've all made less than perfect shots. With all this talk about wind, there's a good chance that body position, bipod position, parallex adjustment or jerking the ole trigger in exictement could of caused this very easily. Something to think about.

I couldn't agree more! They run a business, entertain, and try to create a demand for our sport. All the products that we buy and use to be successful in our sport would not exist, or be in short supply if there were not enough people to buy them. I fully agree that since we are taking game animals, that the use of proper equipment, knowledge, and skill development are absolute necessities. From what I can see, that message comes across loud and clear on the LRH shows. I think people that watch the show, decide to engage in LRH, and have the means, are generally smart enough to recognize the inexperienced shooters on the show are being coached by the experts, and that the producers are trying to demonstrate that with the right tools and skills it is possible to take game at extended ranges. They then proceed to pursue information from sites like this one and begin the education process. My guess is that if someone blindly goes into the sport they are probably not going to hit anything at long range anyway. Overall, I believe these shows, while not always perfect, are not only entertaining, but a benefit to us and we shouldn't dump on them.

This is EXACTLY the route that I took. Started with LRP and ended with a 338 Lapua and some practice. And I thank everyone on this site for helping me out with my many many questions. Before joinin this site I only felt comfortable out to 200 yards, now 400 for sure and maybe 600 depending on how I do shooting next week.:) again a thank you to every one especially LTLR and Broz. gun)

Guys, this was latt durance, not a guest. He's the one that gives LR shooting segments on the show. No disrespect, but I would not have aired that show. That's the kind of thing the anti's are looking for.

"I think people that watch the show, decide to engage in LRH, and have the means, are generally smart enough to recognize the inexperienced shooters on the show are being coached by the experts."...................................................I would have thought so to and am sure that most do but definitely not all of them. I call em how I see em even if it means dumping on em sometimes but definitely appreciate what they have done for the sport.

all im saying is if you pay that much for a rifle it better shoot like that. as the gunworks and mcwhorter and mcmillan and all the othere high priced rifles do

there is a reason they are high priced and that is the guarantee that they shoot
It doesn't matter how accurate the rifle is, or the rifle/load/scope combo is.

You still have to have the calculations right, and have to have someone driving it capable of making the shot or you have a very bad day. If you put it on TV then you have a bad ending to a show.

I've had clients hunt with me that literally had more invested in what they were shooting than I did in my F-350 that still couldn't hit a bull in the *** at 5 yards with a four yard barrel!

I've also had guys show up with a 25.00 piece of junk that rode around the the back of grampa's pickup for a decade or more who never missed a shot.

There's far more to it than just the hardware especially when you get to talking bout long range with a rifle.

ok guys after watching the show again tonight yes it was latt and what had happened was the wind picked up right as he was pulling to trigger. You can hear the spotter say that the wind is picking up right as the gun was going off.

this stuff happens and at 800 yards 5 mph of wind is alot and if you look close at the show there in some pretty stout wind on that hunt. All in all still a good shot weather it was in the but or not.

Do they put these shows on the internet? I'd like to watch that one.

Problem with covering up and not telling the whole truth is it's an admission of guilt. I haven't seen the show but if it ended with meat on the plate there should be no guilt.

The anti's have plenty of ammunition real and made up. Changing my behavior because of them and I might as well just give it up because they have already won.

I would like to chime in and say, I have shot with each and everyone of the folks at best of the west, and THEY ARE SOME OF THE FINEST SHOTS I have had the pleasure of spending trigger time with, and John porter has forgotten more about longrange shooting then alot of us will ever know! We all can make a bad shot from time to time and things happen, but every time I shoot with these folks I not only learn something new but am so impressed with the shots these guys make and how easy the wind calls seem to come to them. not only are they great shots but super nice folks! They were the first to bring longrange hunting to the public and their contributions to our sport has played a huge part in making what it is today. Also they assemble each and every rifle that they sell, they use the cooper 520 and 560 actions and now they also offer the stiller action Earl their gun smith puts togther one hell of a rifle. He also holds many longrange shooting records his own self. I myself love their show as well as others but i take it for what it is and I know bad shots happen.

Misrepresentation is misrepresentation. In the field stuff happens. If you need to edit ok, but do a better job. Nobody likes their intelligence questioned, we're not stupid, and this won't get by the anti's either. Trying to "sneak" something like this by doesn't serve the folks putting it forward all that well. I didn't see this one, but the one where there's a shot by a woman on an elk at long range, don't remember the yardage or caliber (6mm?), caused a fair bit of discussion/scepticism. Credibility is easy to lose, tough to earn, tougher to re-earn.
I don't know these guys, and suspect they're great shots, maybe they need a better editor, or better editorial control if they've farmed it out.
