I'm seekin'on some good loads for this cartridge - would sure appreciate any accuracy loads and feedback. Bullets, powder, case suggestions - anything would be appreciated.

I'm shooting Lapua brass, Fed 210 primers, and 140 gr SMKs over 50.0 grs of Re 22 (over book max but no pressure signs). This load regularly shoots .2 to .4 inch groups with an average muzzle velocity of 2980 fps out of a 26 inch Rock Creek Barrel.
Also shoot 140 gr Hornady SSTs over 49.0 grs Re 22 (same brass and primer) this load averages 2950 fps but this load is tough to keep under 1", best I could do with this bullet so far, will be trying H-1000 again in the near future.

I had best results with H-4831 lots of groups in the .2's and so far it's gone under .5 at 200 fairly often. Comeing up on 200 rounds.
I would start 2 grains under and work up these were hot in my last 6.5-284

If this is going to be for hunting I'd recommend the SST over the SMK. I shot 13 whitetails this year 11 with SST and 2 (that was enough) with the SMK. All 13 deer were broadside double lung shots. Every thing hit with the SSTs was dead within 20 yds, most dropped in their tracks. Ranges were between 50 and 525 yards. No bullets recovered.
The 2 hit with the SMKs were at 175 yds and both went over 100 yds after impact. Very little external bleeding and hard to track. Deer were donated so no attempt made to recover bullets.
If you can get them to shoot the SSTs kill like the hammer of thor.

I load for 2- 6.5 x .284`s....one target and one hunting...Target is 25" lilja hv., hunt is 30" lilja lite.48.8grs.IMR4350,142 sierra MK.w-w- primers,lapua brass.I can get over 2900ft/sec.out of the 25" gun...no pressure.

My six-five is a 30 1/2" 5 groove Pac-Nor barrel. I shoot 140 grain Berger Vld's at 3115 avg with 50.0 grains of RL-22. It shoots about 3/8" at 100 yards, 2" at 600, and it has shot a 7 shot 22" group at 1 mile. It is a fairly hot load (still easy on my Norma brass) and I run about .001" clearance on each side of the neck. The standard deviation with several lots of RL-22 has always been hovering around 4 to 9 fps.
On a brand new barrel, I would suggest using the Bergers or the A-max for long range hunting as they are much more frangible than the Sierras and are more likely to open up. At some point in the barrel's life though, you will probably have to switch to the sierra's because they tolerate rough throats better than J4 jacketed bullets.
I shot a doe antelope in Wild-oming last fall at 1030 yards with the Bergers and I thought they did a really good job. Total penetration yet they still caused much damage. Shrapnel was quite extensive.

Good question. So far I am OK for the suggested powders, but will be chasing down bullets, brass and hopefully some factory ammo. Interested in Hornady Amax since they usually shoot so well, nice looking 140 grain available. Will try any 6.5 bullet I can find, then decide on a final load. Have only shot this cartridge once, a while back near the Black Hills and the rifle was very accurate. Flat as a .300 mag and kicks less than a .308 Win.
Lots of paperwork to get in place before I worry about shooting it tho.
This just came on so have not decided on a scope - possibly a 3.5 - 10 MK 4 Leupy but might want a bit more magnification.

My last 6.5-284 was a 26" 1-8 twist Hart Barrel (Sendero contour)set in a Sako Varmint McMillan stock. I would have kept it but the short action drove me nuts. It loved the 140 A-max. with either R-22 or H-4831. It also shot great with 120 NBT's 3250fps (the deer hated em)
I hope to also find an A-max load for the new one and test it out soon on some crop damage tags. I will post results.
