Remington 700 quality

Hmmmm....me thinks George Soros is now owner of Remington! Reckon that could be the reason for Remington being in the 'tank'??

I believe that is false. The NRA had come out with a statement confirming that Soros had no connection to the Remington. I think they are in the tank for the age old reason........crappy management. We had one of Remington's R&D guys at a shoot. He was very frustrated. He said that the company was very bureaucratic, and getting ideas, or improvements implemented was near impossible. In contrast, the Savage people attend our shoots on a regular basis, bring new designs to get input, donate rifles as prizes, and have given tours of their factory to the members of our rifle club. The CEO of Savage even showed up at one of the local clubs to participate in a shoot. The contrast between the two companies is stark. We are located within driving distance of both Remington, and Savage.

OK first everyone here has a point or two and with that said here are some things that need to be said. The Remington 700 action is one of the most cloned actions out there so that has something to say about them doesn't it? Second with all the lawsuit happy consumers it's really a wonder any firearm mfg. is still in business! Third I don't know about the rest of you out there but I'm tired of seeing a NASCAR driver telling me what I should buy in a hunting rifle ! What can I go on TV and tell them what motors and gearing to use that part is a joke but it does have an effect on the product we see as it cost the mfg.'s $$ to have these guy's on there and most of them couldn't even tell what caliber a rifle is while holding it as they have no Idea where to look to see where it is stamped on them! Yes I'm a fan of Remington rifles I own many and a few Rugers and a Browning and a Berretta or two and yes the industry has gotten way too gimmicky but that is sales and anything built by humans are going to have their problems. I have just traded for a newer built Remy in 6.8 SPC so we shall see if the quality has gone down and Ill do a posting after I have done some testing to let everyone know about quality and accuracy etc. I hope I haven't put all of you too sleep with my post! Last is pricing they get that part from what we the buyer's are willing to spend so if we don't push back then the price just keeps climbing if we stopped buying maybe then the MFG's would wake up.

From a recent Remington purchase, I think their quality has gone down. The action is still one of the best, but their barrels stink!

I probably won't buy a new Remington because:

I don't like their trigger,

I don't like their safety,

I don't like the fit of their stocks.



I own 7 or 8 of them anyway.

Remington actions are OK....just make certain the lugs are square and that you've got a 'pinned' firing pin! This is my 6.5x47L:

This IS NOT an unusual group fired from 1000 yards. There are 17 shots in this clanger which is 20" in diameter. First two shots over at the 9 o/clock side were my sighters as there was a 12 mph wind coming in from 3 o/clock and I didn't add quite a bit right MOA. The other shot away from center is slightly below the two wind shots but I called that one! Overall diameter of bull is 44" and the inner plate is 20". This is the same size bull as the paper target used by the Creedmoor shooters who shoot Palma matches and BPCR events on! I just made this one out of steel as I don't need to go down to the target (if paper is used) to see my hits as the 25X spotting scope picks up the hits very well!

I just picked up a new Sendero sitting on the shelf a local gun store and the floor plate has about 1/4" of side to side slop in it. Their QC sucks.

Don't take my reply the wrong way, I have several Sendero's that will shoot under MOA with no trouble and a BDL in 7 mag that will do under MOA with ease. One of my most accurate Remmingtons is a ADL in 243win, this is easily a .75" rifle with federal 85 gr HPBT's, but it routinely jams trying to grab a shell from the box magazine. I put up with the jamming because it shoots so good, but trying to reload after the first shot can be a little exciting when the animal does not drop in it's tracks.

I've not had the # of 700s alot of other people on this board have but i did work in a gun shop about 7yrs and am still good friends with the owner. This store is a authorized remington repair/warranty station so very few things have to actually go back to the factory.

Rem 700 quality has certainly gone down hill in the last 5-10 years to the point where this shop usually just ships new items with issues back to the factory anymore.

Not worth their time to make the repairs in house anymore.

I hope they can get back on track and start puting out a quality product again.

Until this happens, no more NEW 700's for me. Ill still buy the older ones.

I'm going to step out on a limb and speculate that modern production methods have narrowed the gap between the low end and high end big volume production rifles in terms of quality.

Either way, lemons can/do slip through. Sometimes these could be spotted at the factory or gun store. If you got one of those, perhaps you should've looked more closely. Others don't show up until you shoot them. This even occurs with custom rifles sadly enough. In which case, it's simply a question as to what the mfg/smith is going to do about it.

Fine rifles still require extra TLC to make a difference which is reflected in the price tag.

Factory rifles just don't do it for me any more. I started building my own so that I can have them made to my personal taste/specs.

I have owned a truck load of remington 700's and had very few issues. Alot of problems I see with remington 700's is from people working on them that shouldn't. Most proven action out there by far.

I think there is a lot of shooting with the keyboard going on here, I have had 5 SPS Tacticals and they would all shoot 1/2" at 100 yds with 168 smk, Varget and BR2 primers, yea the stocks are crap but I would rather have a lousy stock than a lousy barrel and action. Rugers are hit and miss and I can't get past the barrel nut on a Savage. If you want a good shooter all the time CZ may be the way to go.

In my opinion, other than aftermarket parts availabiltiy, there is very little to recommend about the Remington 700 when they were being made with even a moderate level of quality. That time has long since passed and the quality of anything made in the last ten years is ****.

If you must use a 700 pattern, one would be much better served by starting with a custom action and purchasing quality parts to round out the package.
